My old landlord had a mastiff, and she was a mean nasty old dog, but then he trained her to be, and kept her penned, and had signs posted. So I don’t judge the breed, but I really think it is stupid to train so large a dog to be hostile.

As someone who is looking into getting an english mastiff, I’m starting to pay more attention to this breed banning. I’m floored that people would be so stupid! And I would like to know HOW they made it illegal for someone to own a certain type of dog? Really, can that be enforced? It’s like dictating what type of vacuum cleaner I can own or what type of mattress I can sleep on! Or, like I said, how long until motorcylces are banned because people get killed on them??

Geez…what crap. I’ve had more problems with aggressive smaller breeds than I’ve ever had with large dogs. it’s just that a bigger dog is more scary, and that a bite from a bigger dog is more likely to get medical attention, just due to the size.

My mother (a good example of poor responsibility) would leave me alone all day while she went out all day when I was 2-4 years old..with only the dog to watch me. Damien was the sweetest rottie I’ve ever known….and obviously gentle since I survived to adulthood, geez. 🙄 🙄 Any dog can be MADE mean…with ignorance and lack of responsible pet-ownership. Or sometimes just pure stupidity.

A former b/f of mine owned a business and got a dobie for a watch dog. One night the place was broken into and when he got there the next morning he had to fish the dobie out from under the desk – great watch dog.

The pictures of dobies you guys have posted are beautiful.

mmloda, what a beautiful Doberman! He looks like such a sweetie! I love seeing Dobermans without cropped ears! I’ve never understood why they do that. 😕

This is sad and sure to spread. Keep a close eye on your state and write educated and even-headed letters to the people in your local government if you can.

I worked in chain pet stores in Houston for 5+ years (you know the ones… where you can bring your pet with you). Unfortunately the bully breeds and the larger dogs are starting to get a really bad rep because they are becoming popular for all the wrong reasons. Owning a Pitt Bull/ Mastiff/ Dobie is a status symbol for many Americans. You have probably seen the type- usually guys (no offense) that want to have a ‘badass’ image and have to have a ‘badass’ dog. Unfortunately these are the same individuals that don’t necessarily care about the animal or invest in basic training, etc. They have the animal as a symbol and not really anything more.
Without basic obedience (sit/stay/ even basic leash training) these dogs are going to be more likely to get into a situation where someone gets hurt/bit. It’s as if you have a child, raise it in a violent setting, teach it no manners or social skills- and then are surprised when they get into a fist fight with someone! And yet that is what is happening with so many dogs. It’s no wonder we have biting accidents with them.

And, unfortunately, we all know what happens when they ban things. Only the law-abiding citizens are hurt. Because, if someone wants to own a banned dog or fight it, they still will find a way to do so.

Just got a look at the Leola ban. So basically they just banned the “scary” looking dogs and the most popular big dog breeds.

I find it SOOOOO ironic that the banned breeds are allowed if they are service dogs. You’d think if these dogs were so dangerous, they would not be capable of being service dogs. 🙄 And people are allowed to breed and sell them? Ok, that makes sense. You can breed and sell these dogs, but only 99.99% of the population will be allowed to own them!

My aunt, when she lived with us, had an akita/chow/something mix, Chico, that was horribly unsocial and my brother and I were small children. The dog tried to attack us (we were like 3 or 4), but my dad stepped in and grabbed the dog by the neck and threw it head over tail about 15+ feet. Dog got up, thought about it, and never bothered us again. Not the dog’s fault. He was never socialized by anyone and my aunt didn’t do much to fix that after she got him (he was grown when she got him from someone). Gives akitas and chows a bad name 😡

Good for your Dad but boo to your Aunt. Here’s My Akita Chow Alf with his buddy Scruffy a Chow/Lab . We took him to all the kids karate classes as a puppy. He’s so well socialized he thinks everyone is a potential new friend 😆

I want a dobe so bad…. The problem is I don’t like raising puppies. They are cute, but, I just don’t have the time, energy, or patience. The biggest problem with that is…. My mom is terrified of dobes….. I don’t know why either. So, for now I’ve put off getting one….. Even though I lost my heart to two of them at the humane society. They were both so sweet, problem is they were starving, and covered in dandruff….. I wonder what became of them. They both had warnings on the cards, I hope they were adopted…….
