Would direct contact with a product containing amonia affect the paint on a Windstone Sculpture? I’m just covering my bases before I try and experiment for a repair.

DON’T use amonia on Windstones!
Unless, of course, you want to remove the paint for some reason. It will soften the paint, but doesn’t seem to harm the underlying sculpture.. If you want to really get the paint off, use acetone.March 1, 2007 at 2:16 am #545407No I DON’T want to take the paint off! That’s been my problem, LOL! I’m going to try and make a new tail & feet for an Emperor Dragon thats is completely missing them, and I’m trying to get a basic shape by molding something around my Emperor’s tail from my personal collection, but I don’t want to harm it at all in doing so.
Here is the poor fellow

Sorry but he looks funny without feet or a tailMarch 1, 2007 at 2:30 am #545409I can’t believe he still stands up on his own. Is there anything you can suggest for me to fix him?

Hydrostone seems to adhere extremely well straight onto the break (or so it does with my repaired pearl mother dragon).
March 1, 2007 at 3:23 am #545411See, That’s kind of what I was trying to do. I’m not trying to make a mold of an Emperor or anything copyright infringing, just a cast of the missing piece, I just don’t want to destroy another Emperor in the process. I bought this rubber mold stuff you are supposed to paint on the area, but it has amonia in it, hence why I was asking Mel about it. It just didn’t seem like a good idea to apply straight to a Windstone. I would think the paint would peel right off with it when I tried to remove it.
How do you do what you were saying. I’ve never heard of hydrostone

Hydrostone is a real nice mineral stone that is either what windstones are cast in or just close to it (as an example). It doesn’t carve easily, but is managable with sharp tools. I used it to repair a chunk from my mother dragon’s tail ( http://www.unchartedart.com/junk/IMG_15122.JPG ) and I haven’t been able to pull it off by pushing at it, so it works very well.
As per your emperor, if what you bought says latex anywhere on it, it will have ammonia in it. I have silicone rubber arriving tomorrow that I’ll be testing on a damaged chunk from my emperor’s wing to see if it causes paint peeling. If it doesn’t I can recommend it or a plaster mold if it doesn’t work. But working in a reverse method, I’m sure a small rubber mold from the damaged area of your emp, I could make a plaster cast of that damage. Then I can make a rubber mold from my emp and fit that onto the damage mold, then cast the hydrostone fitting. Long process, I know, but he’ll have feet and a tail again!March 1, 2007 at 4:28 am #545413drag0nfeathers wrote:See, That’s kind of what I was trying to do. How do you do what you were saying. I’ve never heard of hydrostone oh, I see.. hmm. How about that gelatin mold material? I’ve seen it in craft catalogues, it is used to make molds of your body parts. I think it is pretty harmless, although it would have some water in it.
March 1, 2007 at 7:56 am #545414Hmmmmmm, both suggestions sound good. I’d like to try it myself ( I love fixing these guys and this will be my biggest challenge thus far ) I just need to know what materials I need ( and are safe to use ) on my Emperor to make a new tail and feet. I’ll have to look up that gelatin stuff Melody suggested.
If that doesn’t work I may be contacting you Algy. What would the cost of something like what you described run for if I had you try it?Got a busted Windstone?

Hydrostone isn’t so bad though.
I offer to help in anyway, if you need it. 🙂March 1, 2007 at 4:32 pm #545416Wow, those links are really helpful Algy. As soon as I get some extra money I’ll have to give it a try!

Dreamscape, Orion, Poison Dart, Fireberry, Spangler + Tigerberry DragonsMarch 1, 2007 at 9:38 pm #545417The only problem with silicone (besides the price!) is that it can sometimes have alot of silicone oil in it. Silicone oil contamination of the plaster part you are casting will prevent paint from sticking to it.Be sure to wash out your silicone mold well with alcohol before casting plaster into it.
Another tip; Wet the dragon’s feet and tail edges real good before pouring plaster against them, or the set part will draw too much water out of the newly cast part. This could weaken it,or even prevent it from setting properly.March 1, 2007 at 9:42 pm #545418*blinks* Maybe I’m too inexperienced to tackle this! LOL
