My husbands friends came over to visit last night since he is home from the hospital. He hasn’t seen them for years since they live in Virgina. Well they brought there two year old daughter with them and of course like all children she was playing with all the cat toys and my husbands empty oxygen tank. His friend took the oxygen tank away from her but proped it up next to one of my curio cabinets (which I didn’t see because I wasn’t paying them any mind).
Well later she decided to swing the cats turbo scratcher which went flying into the oxygen tank knocking it over. It was like slow motion, I saw the tank head right for my curio which is made of glass. I dived at it and caught it right in time to keep it from smashing all my windstones. Now my knee is skined from sliding across the floor and my husband was yelling at me for throwing myself on the floor being pregnant and all.
His friend kept saying he was sorry and would have paid for anything that was broken. I told him everything in that display case is either retired, limited production, or limited edition and couldn’t be replaced. If it had smashed my white flap cat, ivep lap dragon and all my curlies would have bit the dust not to mention my bvp ow that is on the shelf right next to them. I can still feel my heart pounding just thinking about what could have happened.
August 27, 2007 at 3:57 pm #492436August 27, 2007 at 4:14 pm #612022Holy crap! That is the stuff made of nightmares!! Glad everything is ok!!
August 27, 2007 at 4:16 pm #612023And this is part of the reason when I travel with my almost three-year-old son I keep a sharp eye on him when visiting people with collectibles.
August 27, 2007 at 4:27 pm #612024Oh man! I would have died if that curio fell over. I have a glass one too standing next to our dining room table with some collectibles in it. I’m afraid to put any of my windstones in it though, because I’m afraid of our dog running into it. She is a 7 month old bassett… and gets in these crazy moods where she loves to run full speed laps around the place with her large bone. She likes to circle around the dining room table too. So, I am just soooo scared that one day that bone is gonna fly outta her mouth and into my cabinet… or her bump it while running past it. I’m gonna wait for her to settle down before I put anything in there that I can’t stand losing!
August 27, 2007 at 4:46 pm #612025OMG purple i’m so glad you managed to catch it! I have rules in my room, no banging and jumping 😆 Infact your best to not come in, home of the dragons.
August 27, 2007 at 4:58 pm #612026Wow, it is a good thing that you did catch it….but I kinda agree with your husband you do need to watch what you do. And the other thing is if you didn’t catch the tank then your husband would of found out what you paid for everything. 😛
August 27, 2007 at 5:02 pm #612027I’m so glad nothing was broken, purpledoggy. That kid needs to be kept on a short leash.
August 27, 2007 at 5:23 pm #612028This is why I don’t like kids over my house (parents never watch them and let them run everywhere). She kept banging on the glass door to both the cabinest and I told her mother they were made of glass and not to let her do that. My husband was mad I jumped on the floor since his friend said he was sorry and would pay if his daughter broke anything. I told him he didn’t have enough money to replace the dragons in the one curio since its over a thousand dollars worth of windstone in the one case alone. He thought I was talking about my bvp ow and got all pissed off so I told him “no hon I’m talking about the windstones in the cruio cabinet no the bvp”. Guess I’ll never tell him what I paid for that guy lmao.
August 27, 2007 at 5:39 pm #612029See, I wish my husband would never ask me how much my new Windstones cost. I hate to tell him, but I hate to lie to him too. I wish he would just get a hobby of his own and not supervise me in mine. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him… that’s the way I see it!
August 27, 2007 at 6:03 pm #612030Woii . . . what a nightmare indeed, if it had hit the curio! 😯 Well done on the save. And although they insist that vigorous activities (like power slides across the floor :P) are risky during pregnancy, look at it this way: You would have been much more stressed and upset for weeks–or longer–if it had broken your Windstones! As it was, you had one heck of an adrenaline spike, but your Windstones are safe. So it was a short-term stressor as opposed to a much longer-term one. I’d say that that is less harmful.
Living in earthquake country, I sometimes think about what would happen if a big shaker hit. The Windstones would be toast: they’re all in tall cabinets that are mostly glass. But the only way to protect them would be to keep them boxed up all the time . . . and then I can’t see them and enjoy them. It’s a real pickle! 😛
August 27, 2007 at 6:17 pm #612031I am glad your Windstones are safe and you were not badly injured saving them. I live in hurricane alley and have often wondered what I would do about all my Windstones (66 and counting) if my area got hit by a bad one because they would never all fit in my little Z if I had to leave and my dog would be in the passenger seat as I would never leave him anywhere he might be in danger.
August 27, 2007 at 6:27 pm #612032My bf was playing fetch with Moocah and tossed the rope onto my hatching empress. Of course the dog went for it. She was very gentle and pulled the rope out very slowly, and luckily there was no damage. I was scared! I didnt want to make any sudden moves and freak out the dog. She was looking at me out of the corner of her eyes when she wasnt glancing at the dragons. 😆
August 27, 2007 at 9:02 pm #612033Well Purpledoggy, just remember your time is ticking, soon you will have a little one you are going to have to chase around. And they get mobile faster than you think. You might want to start babyproofing your Windstone collection now.
Granted the parents should have been paying more attention, he also should not have put the oxygen tank anywhere it was likely to fall over, even empty!
You daughter will be crawling by 5 to 6 months of age, so you’re going to need to start figuring out how to protect your collection soon. Gone are the days of just putting things anywhere you like without considering whether the child will have access to it.
Trust me, even after 6 years of training, we still find out via our 14 month old daughter that we didn’t quite get that “whatever it is we didn’t want her to get” out of the way like we thought.
We have two curio cabinets, and after they were here for about a week or so, she stopped putting her little paws on the glass. Ours have quite a bit of wood to them though.
Anyway, get used to it. *evil grin* Nope, I’m not a parent, not me!
Trust me, it will be fun watching her learn about her world, but you will likely need to put the Windstones someone less accessible for awhile once she is mobile.

August 27, 2007 at 9:09 pm #612034I’m glad you and your collection are safe!! I would have had a heart attack right there and then. This is part of the reason we visit my brother and my 4 year old nephew and 1 year old neice at their house, I have soooo many breakables.
I used to just sneak new Windstones into the collection. Not like my hunney would ever have noticed but now we have to take pics of them to include in the house insurance…sucks.
