Darn that Chris…..we were sparring..had a good match going and everything…i block his swing and find myself holding a broken Bokken…crud. Now I need a new sword…twas a good match though! π
June 24, 2008 at 12:39 am #717238Aw, that’s a bummer.
June 24, 2008 at 12:42 am #717239eh..we were having fun, I’m not too bummed about it…I posted it mainly cause these things are supposed to be made of strong stuff…but Chris and I spar pretty hard. Does anyone know of a good place for me to shop for a new one? A good…non-destructable one? π
June 24, 2008 at 12:50 am #717240Good thing bokken aren’t that expensive. They break after time. I know one of mine has some marks in it, but should last a little while longer. If you can get one, Chinese Red Oak is one of the best woods to get Bokken in (strong, but has the right amount of give, since Chinese Red Oak acts like a conifer, with an almost continous growing season). No bokken, or wooden sword handle, will ever be indestructible, until they decide to grow a harder tree π
At least you have a real one. My dumb former housemate decided he wanted to make some out of treated lumber. All I can say is the shatter factor to the bokken just went WAY up (shattering isn’t something you want in a wooden weapon). I wouldn’t spar with him if he used them (not that I would spar with him anyways… he didn’t have control, kinda like, if you said stop, he would keep coming at you, like he was running you down. NOT a good quality to have in a sparing partner or a person with martial arts weapons. Tried this once. I had to scream at him to stop before it finally hit him that the sparring was over. His excuse was that I ‘just couldn’t keep up’. Um… right.
I miss sparring with my friend Corinne from college. We had a lot of fun sparring back in college (similar level, similar drive, and similar height). π

(Look out neighbors and kids… π π π )June 24, 2008 at 1:08 am #717243Hey, we have the Conan sword too! We found out very recently that there’s a small dagger inside… never knew about it, and we had it for years!
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmJune 24, 2008 at 1:11 am #717244oooh… I actually really like the one on the far right! Beautiful pieces!
Chris and I are a good pair for sparring, he has really fast reflexes, and a good offense. I actually took fencing in college..and that got me started. We both love swords and it’s excellent excersize. It’s really funny when you see neighbors..especially the little old lady across the street…start peeking through their windows.
Man….I’d be scared to death to spar with a homeade bokken…we hit just to darn hard for it to be safe. π― Respecting your partner is important too…I wouldnt want to spar otherwise!

That would be the Robinhood! Nice wood handle on it. πJune 24, 2008 at 1:18 am #717248I think that’s why it appeals to me so much…it adds warmth to the sword. π
June 24, 2008 at 1:20 am #717249i saw that in your journal and rofled! that is funny!
June 24, 2008 at 3:01 am #717250That makes me want to get some Bokken and do some *light* sparring with Colin…
