Hello, new here. :hi:
I created this memorial piece for one of our family cats.
Was hoping I could get some advice for the next piece about creating nice fur texture. I love the texture on the Pena cats.
Also any advice when it comes to casting w/resin could be nifty.
the art is at http://www.danielamorescalchi.com/dlmWeb/sculptures.htm
http://www.danielamorescalchi.com/dlmWeb/sculptures.htmI usually post at statue forum but love the Windstone art as well.
Thanks all.May 31, 2010 at 9:57 pm #816500Hi phxDaniela! Welcome! 🙂
I am moving this over to ‘Ask Melody’– I know we have a few members who cast things, and I think Melody and the others probably all will see it better over there and give you advice. 🙂
Best wishes!

I usually carve fur and other details in a plaster casting of the original clay sculpt. This is time consuming, but I haven’t figured out how to make decent texture right into the clay! I know other sculptors who do this successfully using wax and clay, but Ihave no idea how they do it!I don’t know anything about using resin. We only use it to cast production “masters” and that is not something I have done myself.
What material is you original made out of?
June 1, 2010 at 9:47 pm #816503Don’t know a thing about it myself, but maybe if you PM’ed some of our other sculptors they could help you as well. Purplecat does awesome work, though I think she works with gypsum like WIndstone. I think Xtharsa works with resin, and maybe keeproftheflocks(?- her website is the copper dragon). Don’t know if enchantments does scuplting/casting… or tfsculptures… don’t think purpleturtle or daydreamer have cast their sculpts…might be others I’m not remembering at the moment.
June 2, 2010 at 1:14 pm #816504Thank you Melody & pipsxlch (Wow Melody you are in Oregon!!! Cool!)
The original work was done in sculpey. (before that I had done one in plasticine & wanted to cast it in latex) But did a second one in sculpey, and as the piece would be set outside it was encased in resin.June 4, 2010 at 6:59 pm #816505pdxDaniela wrote:Thank you Melody & pipsxlch (Wow Melody you are in Oregon!!! 🙂 yupe I do sculpture too alone with my soft sculpture/plush. Texture is always hard in clay 🙁 especially fur and feathers. One thing to remember is to press the texture in, don’t carve the clay (if that makes sense) carving works well on hard media like plaster but on clay it looks messy. One thing I do is try all types of things to press into the clay. Once I find something that looks cool I use it 🙂 fur pressed into clay gives a cool fur texture lol
June 5, 2010 at 1:37 pm #816507well. next piece should be interesting then. I am finishing a figurine of a harpy, perched on a tree trunk. Lots of feathers there.
will put the link up when I am done so you folks, (if you can take the time and are inclined of course) can take a look and offer your opinions.
Cheers
