My mother-in-law always makes pumpkin pies from real pumpkins and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at it. Well today we couldn’t leave the house since my husband had to wait for the home nurse to do a blood draw and we had meds being shipped by fed ex. It was a rainy cool day so I decided to give his mothers recipe a try. OMG I had no idea how freakin hard it is to slice up a pumpkin! I had to cut it up, skin it, then boil it until tender. It took me all morning just to do that. After I had the pumpkin all mashed up I had my husband call his mom since I couldn’t make heads or tails of what she wrote down for the reciepe. I managed to make two pies before I became to worn out from standing in the kitchen all day. Has anyone else make pumpkin pies from scratch? I haven’t had a chance to eat mine yet. I hear they taste so much better after you let them cool all night long.

yup….and the easiest way is to leave the skin on when you boil it and then just scoop the meat out with a spoon after it’s boiled…

and you have to add some honey and spices to it when you mash it or it’s not as sweet when you make the pie…

I make them like that every year and they are the best….that canned pumpkin stuff is repulsive once you make a real one…

          I have a good old recipe somewhere…

          I think I posted it once….

Wow! I make a lot of stuff from scratch, but I’ll admit I go for the easy stuff. Kudos and I hope it’s yummy!

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I’ve never done it. I’ve always wanted to. I’ll have to remember to boil it with the skin on. 😆 I’d have peeled it too.

Yeah I peeled most of the pumpkin then got sick of doing it and left the skin on the rest. I don’t think I boiled it enough though since the skin didn’t peel right off. My husband also said I was supposed to dry off the pumpkin bits before I mashed them (straining them isn’t enough). I had to take the pumpkin mash and sop up all the left over water with paper towels, lol.

LOL…fun….what I did was after mashing it to goo….strain it…

let it sit….mash it again let it sit and strain it again….

it might seem like it takes longer but it actually doesn’t it gives you time to get everything else ready…that….and you stick it all in a pot with a little honey and cinnamon…..and cook it on low for a little while that evaporates water too….

I usually get all that done as soon as pumpkins are for sale….and freeze it till thanksgiving and that’s when I make the pies….

I need to buy more pumpkins. With everything that has been going on I was only able to snag one. I felt so bad cutting up a good pumpkin. All I could think of was all the funny jack-o-lantern faces I could have carved in it.

LOL….that’s funny cause every time I see one cut up and on someone’s porch I think about the bread, pies, cookies, muffins and everything else you could make with it….

                    to me…jack o lanterns are a waste of food…..LOL

This is the first year I’ve made food with a pumpkin so my mindset is OMG Jack-O-Lantern! 😆

Okay, after reading all of this, I think I’ll keep getting my pumpkin pies from the bakery!!! 😆

                      …and Frozen, I love jack-o-lanterns!!! 😛

Making the pies is the easy part its cutting up the stupid pumpkin that takes all the time. If I could get fresh pumpkin cut up and peeled at the store I would have pies everywhere! It doesn’t help that I can’t stand around the kitchen all day without my back killing me.

I’m going to have to buy some pumpkins. All this talk about how the scratch made pies taste better makes me want to try making one.

ok well I’ll do all the cutting and peeling for you…LOL

I also don’t like the crust it says to use either….I use graham cracker…it adds a different flavor….that is so much yummier than that dough crust

I’ll have to try that, I need to buy more pie crusts and pumpkin anyway.
