Those are so adorable.
I always wanted to look into adopting wildlife when Mr. Kitty is gone. (right now he kills everything, or brings it home beyond repair 😥 ). I would like a skunk and a squirrel. Do you need special licensing or anythign to have them?
Thank you for posting. Cuteness overload. 😀
May 6, 2007 at 4:51 am #569542I believe with most “Exotics” it all depends on your state/province, and district in that and city, and zone in city kinda stuff.

I can only speak for Massachusetts (where I reside). In this state, raising squirrels is illegal without a license. We were only caring for them until we could make the journey to a licensed facility. My little sister use to intern for a wildlife sanctuary and had experience in caring for newborn and infant squirrels.
In MA, obtaining a license is not easy and comes with a lot of conditions even for wildlife centers or rehabilitation programs; there are several in my area, but I was forced to travel a distance because that was the only one who could take in squirrels.
I’m not sure how it is in other states or countries. You should definitely look into it for the future.

Depends on where you live, but most states do require special permits. Skunks, Fox, Raccoons and Bats can be Rabies Vectors…meaning they can carry Rabies and not show symptoms and spread it. If you want a vector animal many states outlaw it. You also need to get vaccinated for rabies if you wish to keep one of the above mentioned. Also your Vet may drop your regular animals and refuse you care, due to increased risk.
Squirrels are not rabies vectors and you can usually get a permit. Make sure you understand dietary needs before adopting an exotic pet. Many people think that squirrels can live on nuts and actually that can make them quite ill.
Email me if you have questions about exotic animals…eschete344@bellsouth.net
I have raised sugar gliders, hedgehogs, mink, squirrels, bats, flying squirrels, nutria and the list goes on and on….I would be happy to point you in the right direction.
Word of warning: I spend at least an hour after I get home from work, everyday, cleaning cages, fixing diets, etc….exotics are hard work…
I love every single minute, but I rarely go on vacation and I am a slave to my critters….

They are from a nest that was in my father’s roof rafters. My father was redoing all the soffits and fascias, and found the nest, which looked empty, so he threw it in a plastic trash bag with all the other roof garbage and continued with the roof. The next day when he went to put the bag out for the trash collection, he noticed it moving and looked in, and saw the two babies in there. The usual protocol is to try to unite babies and mother, but since he was trying to get squirrels out of the roof (as well as the birds, bats, and whatever other critters living up there), he wasn’t going to rebuild their nest. None of the wild life centers and individual rehabbers will take them since they say they are at their max with squirrels, and my dad isn’t the raising baby squirrel type, so I’ve taken them in. For now. I might loose my sanity before they even get old enough for release 😆
