Just to clarify – those are interference paints on flat white paint, right? Do they have a clear coat over them?
Have you (or anyone) used pearlescent paints on your PYOs or do you stick to using the interference paints?
Thanks!
those were flat paints…..and then clearcoats on top…I have used them one metallic/pearlescent colors….the same effect is what usually happens…
with Cheryls the white on the wings was irridescent….and interference gold over top….the gold did show more on those…but not well at all in the photos…
Thank you too, frozen, I appreciate the info! It’s very helpful to look at an example of someone’s work and find out what they used to achieve their results. My first attempt is going to be something very simple. No mixing custom colors, etc. I don’t want to frustrate myself right off the bat. lol It’s nice that so many of you are willing to share your knowledge. 😀
January 3, 2007 at 3:50 pm #521466I can’t wait to see everyone elses pretty pretties…..
January 5, 2007 at 7:46 pm #521467I have a decent red metallic paint with delta creamcoat. I am doing a dragon in red and black like flame and will post the photos when he’s done, but that may not be for a while. I also mix sometimes with pearlesent paint, or use a pearlized finish as well, or even pearl-X powders.

I definitely would love to see pictures of that ^_^

But, mixing is half the fun! I love mixing paint, just don’t get carried away or you’ll get a really ugly mud colour that you can’t do anything with. In one of my art classes we had to make our own canvas, and we had to make our own paint. Now that’s really fun, but kind of dumb these days when there are so many different colours and brands out there. But, the main thing have fun. 😀

I could just see myself getting 98% finished and running out of my custom paint! 😯 Maybe I’ll become more adventurous if I decide to do a second or third… The only thing I’ve painted in recent years are walls. They came out nice, though. They are sponge painted and were fun to do.
January 6, 2007 at 1:38 pm #521471I hate mixing paints! I usually end up with a color I dont like 😆 And alot of it, since I try to add stuff to fix it!

😆 That’s how you get mud. Try just mixing a very small amount first. If you don’t like it just leave it alone and start again. Not much wasted if you only use a very small amount.
January 6, 2007 at 6:18 pm #521473Hmm, Everyone should do a mud PYO and see who is the best. hehe

January 7, 2007 at 4:49 am #521475jumping in on this late –
I also hate mixing colors!! But I do it a lot because I’m too cheap to buy any colors besides the primaries. Except for interference colors – I’ve bought LOTS of those, now! 😈
When I feel lazy, I paint with my craft paints – those only cost like $1 each, so I do buy those in lots of colors. As nice as Golden brand is, craft paints can make a mighty nice griffin.I also have yet to find a nice, rich metalic red. I’ll have to check out some of the brands you guys mentioned.
As far as the pearls vs. interference colors – I use both, and sometimes I use both on the same griffin. I use pearls mostly when I want to make a broad area shiny, and interference for accents.
The sunrise griff I just finished is painted almost entirely in pearls with some interference accenting."He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."

I have this really bad habit of being insanely thrifty with my paints, left over from my student days, so i frequently have a hard time mixing paint in an amount larger than a quarter! LOL I usually manage to keep remaking the same colour over and over, i have good “colour memory” 😉
