I’m glad you think it’s cute. I’m not so sure, I wasn’t going to do a solid red, I was going to do bands of red and gold. But, I’m still trying to get a darker red. Oh well, back to the mixing table…maybe if I put alittle blue or violet. Maybe black…

black would make it kind of burgundy….that would be cool
here’s interference colors on the white…
totally different than on the black base
January 2, 2007 at 10:48 pm #521454Just to clarify – those are interference paints on flat white paint, right? Do they have a clear coat over them?
Have you (or anyone) used pearlescent paints on your PYOs or do you stick to using the interference paints?
Thanks!
January 2, 2007 at 10:50 pm #521455I use pearls.
January 2, 2007 at 10:51 pm #521456I don’t know if you mean this or not, but the griffen is painted in irredesent pearl and titanium white.

And then highlight with interference paints?

On the red and white griff? Which part is painted what kind of paint? I can’t see a difference on my monitor:-/

I just use it when I want to make it shiny, but dont want to color it, like the interferences do.

The white is actually a mix of white and pearl. It’s much shinnier than it looks, same with the red. I think I need to take a better picture.January 2, 2007 at 11:16 pm #521461Thanks you two. 😀 I am gearing up to buy supplies for my kids’ PYOs. I also ordered one for myself. The tips and hints are scattered all over the Forum, so your answers helped.

Our colors are usually a mixture of several of these, plus pigments…We spend a lot of time formulating these perfectly, and I don’t even remember what is in most of them. You can approximate these colors yourself, or better yet, come up with new ones, by mixing and experimenting with the metallics that are available from Golden and Liquitex. They are great paints.
The Ruby color is much trickier. It is achieved by carefully airbrushing the transparent red over layers of metallics and other colors. It may not look it, but that color took a long time to perfect! Thanks for those answers! I actually prefer to hear that my problem is with the simplicity of my mixing efforts rather than you using a different brand or type of paint, which may sound crazy. But i can be very patient with layering and mixing paints, i’ll try mixing metallic paints and see what happens, i don’t know why i didn’t think of that. I guess i’m so used to looking to interference paints for anything shimmery! LOL
With pigments, i’m guessing they are specially designed or mixed to be lightfast? I know that pigments by themselves tend to be less lightfast than acrylic, which is something that came up when I was trying to figure out how to make a transparent yellow acrylic mixture for my stained glass. White and yellow, if you just try to dilute them with medium, they turn out so cloudy!
I can believe the ruby red took a long time, there is something really deep about that particular colour.
January 3, 2007 at 12:39 am #521463Thanks frozen and Romeo for your pics, they are great for illustrating how base colour can change how the paints look ^_^

those were flat paints…..and then clearcoats on top…I have used them one metallic/pearlescent colors….the same effect is what usually happens…
with Cheryls the white on the wings was irridescent….and interference gold over top….the gold did show more on those…but not well at all in the photos…
