I’ve mixed the interference paint with the colour that I wanted. I got a dark (lighter than blood red) with Naphthol Red Light and Interference Oxide Red. I found that if I put the interference over the red I got pink. I also mixed other paints with the interference paints and I got really good results.
I’ll have to try that, I’m so used to doing the colour first and then “accenting” with interference afterward, I’ll do up some test mix batches ^_^

It’s always off somehow and doesn’t look ‘right”. That’s why they used an automotive paint on the Ruby dragons! And they still weren’t totally happy with it (though I think it looks pretty!).
Oh gosh, I agree that the ruby colour is very pretty, like dark ruby stones! I love deep jewel hues like that. But thanks for confirming that the Windstone painters use Golden too, i love the brand myself ^_^
Yeah I had trouble with my red and it wasn’t even a jewel red, i just wanted it to not slide into the pink or blue-tone kind of red but still be red! LOL
December 31, 2006 at 7:49 am #521437Try using metallic paints. I find the metallic reds can look awesome, though I have yet to do a PYO in them…and will if the green eye dragons get released soon. Also, try buying a pearlizing medium to mix with your acrylic paints. I do this sometimes too, to make a certain paint shiny. You have to mix it into your paint before painting it onto the PYO. Another option is to seal your sculpt with a pearlizing finishing coat, and then a gloss coating.
December 31, 2006 at 7:51 am #521438My metallic red is totally pink 😕 I have been looking for a nice deep red, and I cant find one, either.
December 31, 2006 at 8:49 am #521439I know some companies sell a metalic medium that you add to any color you want has anyone tried that?

Do you know of any brands offhand? Or are you thinking of silver or bronze metallic medium, because I think i’ve seen those.

My question to Melody (or anyone!) is about the shimmery quality of dragons – how is that achieved? Is there a brand you buy that comes that way or is it something you have to add to normal colours? I recall in another thread you mentioned that the ruby colour is made from automotive paint.
I know acrylic can come in shimmery shades in the Interference category but I’ve noticed that they seem to be light regardless of the colour so that when you put them overtop of other paint, the shimmer is more pearly-related than a darker, jewel tone, if you know what I mean?
What I really want to know is whether it’s possible for someone to get the kind of glowing emeralds and deep blues you get, when we are painting our PYOS, if there’s a trick or a certain kind of paint we would need.
Sorry this is such a rambly question LOLWe use Golden acrylics. They come in all kinds of metalics and interferance colors. Our colors are usually a mixture of several of these, plus pigments…We spend a lot of time formulating these perfectly, and I don’t even remember what is in most of them. You can approximate these colors yourself, or better yet, come up with new ones, by mixing and experimenting with the metallics that are available from Golden and Liquitex. They are great paints.
The Ruby color is much trickier. It is achieved by carefully airbrushing the transparent red over layers of metallics and other colors. It may not look it, but that color took a long time to perfect!December 31, 2006 at 7:02 pm #521442skigod377 wrote:My metallic red is totally pink 😕 I have been looking for a nice deep red, and I cant find one, either.
There aren’t any.

You may find something we missed! I wonder why a good metallic red is so difficult? There are nail polishes that are metallic red in color, yet no acrylics.

Really? I want to see! That is ANOTHER interesting problem with red, it is difficult to photograph!
January 1, 2007 at 8:34 pm #521447I just ordered these two, so I will let you know if they are any good. I am still trying, but so far, nothing looks too promising.

As requested…he’s a bit red…but still looks lighter in the photos…in person he’s pretty dark
January 2, 2007 at 12:20 am #521449If anyone is interested this is the colour I came up with by mixing Naphthol red light and oxide red interference. Maybe this is close to what others are looking for? I’m actually trying to find a darker red than this.

Since this picture I’ve cleaned up some of my splotches and added gold. He is nowhere near done. -
