Now I know Windstones are painted with acrylic and I’m assuming it’s a special kind of acrylic made for airbrushing. My question to Melody (or anyone!) is about the shimmery quality of dragons – how is that achieved? Is there a brand you buy that comes that way or is it something you have to add to normal colours? I recall in another thread you mentioned that the ruby colour is made from automotive paint.
I know acrylic can come in shimmery shades in the Interference category but I’ve noticed that they seem to be light regardless of the colour so that when you put them overtop of other paint, the shimmer is more pearly-related than a darker, jewel tone, if you know what I mean?
What I really want to know is whether it’s possible for someone to get the kind of glowing emeralds and deep blues you get, when we are painting our PYOS, if there’s a trick or a certain kind of paint we would need.
Sorry this is such a rambly question LOL

I’m sure ski could probably put a link for it….but golden acrylics are what I’ve heard the most…..
I use duncan acrylics for ceramics…
the interference colors from golden are great….they are light on light backgrounds and more vivid on dark backgrounds…
I think most of the windstones have a dark primer coat for the vivid colors….like my kirin…
if I put the interference on the light bits it’s harder to see than on the dark bits…
hope that helps a little bit
December 30, 2006 at 8:29 am #521423Oh I am sorry for repeating a topic, I didn’t recall seeing this particular subject before!
I’ve got Golden paints and I’m familiar with putting them over black or dark colours yep ^_^ Your example is a good one – say you wanted the purple-blue to be darker but still as iridescent? I’ve tried thinning the interference paints with medium which helps but there is a point where it seems to mean less shimmer factor because i was spreading the paint so thin. I’m not sure if i’m making sense there LOL
Another interesting thing regarding the red interference is that when you put it on, it’s actually pretty pink. When i was doing my Sunbeam gryphon, i had a hard time trying to get a shimmery layer over my vermillion-type red that would enhance the red without going pink. I added orange interference and then i had to make sure it didn’t turn too orange/gold. That’s why Melody saying the ruby coloration is done with automotive paint made sense to me.
December 30, 2006 at 12:42 pm #521424I’ve mixed the interference paint with the colour that I wanted. I got a dark (lighter than blood red) with Naphthol Red Light and Interference Oxide Red. I found that if I put the interference over the red I got pink. I also mixed other paints with the interference paints and I got really good results.
December 30, 2006 at 1:16 pm #521425I know we have talked about the paints before but I dont remember anything about airbrushing in particular. Also, I find that the different black I used caused different results. I got a little bit of black from the factory to touch up my peacock mother and the interference paint works great over that black, but the black I bought here is not the same consistency (It is more creamy…the Windstone stuff was almost like water!) and the interference paint looks more washed out on my black.

Red is the hardest color to do I’ve found (and Melody’s told me!) because it never looks like the red we have pictured in our head… it always comes out looking like nail polish or something. It’s always off somehow and doesn’t look ‘right”. That’s why they used an automotive paint on the Ruby dragons! And they still weren’t totally happy with it (though I think it looks pretty!).
Ski, the paint you got from the factory was probably very thin because they use it in an airbrush, and it has to be pretty thin to go on properly. 🙂

My art: featherdust.comDecember 30, 2006 at 4:58 pm #521427Ahhhh! I didnt even think of that! I was just wondering if it was something I can buy because it coats so well and goes on really easy. I love it! Do you know if I can purchase it somewhere?

they have airbrush acrylic paints at just about any hobby store that sells airbrushes..
and there’s a medium you can get for golden brand to make it thin for airbrushing..
and like Nam said…in any kind of paint red is the hardest to get….
house paint you have to have a red primer and at least 5 coats of red to make it come out right…
on the red kirin I’m doing now….I’ve already put 4 coats on….and it’s still a little light for me….but after a few adjustments I might live with it…
December 30, 2006 at 7:39 pm #521429see and you are trying to get us the non painters to have to try to deal with this headache??? No wonder I have never tried it!!

Windstone uses a lot of Golden brand paint (this was mentioned before, somewhere… can’t find the thread now), so it’s possible it’s Golden brand that’s been thinned with a medium. The Golden Fluid acrylics are often used for airbrushing by other artists- these may be what Windstone uses… perhaps Melody can fill in the rest (I’m not sure!). 🙂
Generally though, really thin paints are hard to brush paint onto a PYO because they ‘pool’ as gravity pulls on ’em. 😉

My art: featherdust.comDecember 30, 2006 at 9:59 pm #521431Yay! I just went shopping and bought a golden brand black. I hope it works well.
December 30, 2006 at 10:28 pm #521432I guess I’ll have to try painting one of these days when I have some “FREE” time!!

As silly as it seems, there is more than one ‘shade’ of Golden brand black, and some of them do look more shiny or more matte! 😆

My art: featherdust.comDecember 30, 2006 at 11:48 pm #521434BAH! Oh well 😆 The black I use not works pretty well. Who would have thought there could be so many shades of BLACK!!
