So how are you more covered? By personal check or money order?
I bought something from someone and now they are telling me they don’t have a Paypal account and need to send a check or money order to them… I’m a little nervous about the whole thing…. how do I protect myself the best without using Paypal or credit card?

I’m not sure you’d be covered either way you go. A money order is like cash, I’m not sure it’s traceable. With a cheque, you’d know once it’s cashed, so they can’t say they never got it if the money went out, but if they don’t ship, you can’t get a dispute open or anything like that.
Tough decision. You could insist paying via paypal, no matter what. So people use friends’ accounts…

I don’t know what, if any, protection they can give; but at least I know they will be much more willing to help me than banks or the Post Office if problems arise. I do know you should stay away from Western Union Money Orders because they are frequently counterfeited; even if you get one directly from WU itself, a person might be leery about accepting one.
I thought you could pay people through PayPal even it they do not have an account, that they only needed an email address to receive money. 😕 Something to look into. I would definitely prefer to use PayPal if you are dealing with someone you don’t know. 🙂
August 15, 2010 at 7:57 pm #824367To my knowledge, the person receiving the money must have a paypal account (where else would the money go??) but someone doing the buying does not need a paypal account and can use a credit card.

My art: featherdust.comAugust 15, 2010 at 8:06 pm #824368I have sent a money order once.
The bank will give you a receipt and the money order is traceable. As long as you keep the receipt (copy of the money order) if a problem arises it will be refunded. That is the experience I have had and what my bank does.August 15, 2010 at 8:17 pm #824369You can get a money order at walmart for like 50 cents. It comes in two parts, the “check” part and a stub with the ID number and amount on it that you keep as proof. It’s probably safer to send the money order because it doesn’t have your bank account number on it!!

Yes, you are rightl I found the email PayPal sent to me a while back:
August 15, 2010 at 8:36 pm #824371Or you could paypal the money to the seller’s friend who might have a paypal account, and the friend can pass the money along. But there again, if they are not on ebay, or the transaction doesnt occur through ebay, and there is a problem, you’re still kind of on your own.
No one has tried it with me, but Im leery of sending checks to people I dont know for one reason: It has your signature, account number and routing number on it. I THINK it would be easy to copy the check that you’ve signed and fill in a different amount, add a one or two infront of it ($50 becomes $150 or $950 etc) or even just somehow route any money coming into your account into theirs….IDK, checks to strangers are a no no to me, but Ive always been paranoid lol
As far as I know, money orders are not safe if you dont know the person because once its cashed, its cashed, end of story. Some companies might offer a buyer protection, but none that I know of.
Sorry I wasnt too much help!
August 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm #824372I would recommed that you check with your bank and see what they say about cheques vs money order.
Personally, I’ve sent payment both ways and my experience with my bank is that money orders are very much like cash, not traceable. A cheque however while not as traceable as a credit card etc. at least you can see when they deposit it and if you’ve got online banking, can view the cheque and make sure there are no changes. You can also cancel the cheque should something go wrong, and report it to your bank as a ‘forged’ document. Would also recommend that you do something like scan the original and get a friend or bank teller to witness/sign that the scan is real if you are worried about it on that end. Hope this makes sense.August 15, 2010 at 10:18 pm #824373I’m just wondering if there is a problem which one am I more likely to be able to get a refund from if I run into an issue on non receipt of the item. 🙁 That’s sort of what I am afraid of.
For the Paypal thing without an account, I think that works opposite. They are the seller and I am the buyer… right? Wait… I’m confused. I think the SELLER needs an account and I could pay them if I didn’t have one. We’re in the opposite situation. 🙄

He took the money order and I recieved no dragons (in fact, another forum member here sent the same guy the same price for the dragons and SHE got the dragons in the mail, but the guy took my money anyway) The guy answered my calls a few times, hung up on me a few times, then stopped answering my calls. It was a postal money order, so I went to the post office. I had to pay a fee to even find out if the money order had been cashed already. It had been cashed, and there was nothing they would/could do for me. So, I lost the money and I had to pay a fee for them to tell me “too bad.”

Dreamscape, Orion, Poison Dart, Fireberry, Spangler + Tigerberry DragonsAugust 15, 2010 at 11:28 pm #824376To the best of my knowledge, Drag0n, there is no recourse with either a personal check or a money order if they do not send the goods. There is no way to get a refund. Unless of course you have some sort of super cool bank that you do your checking with! But I’ve never heard of a bank that would back that up. The only possible recourse I know of is that if it’s a company, you can report them to the Business Bureau but even then you are not usually refunded unless the company in question decides to buck up and refund customers.
You can ask your bank but I suspect they’ll say tough luck 🙁

My art: featherdust.comAugust 16, 2010 at 12:11 am #824377Can you request COD? That way both are covered, except if he ships an empty box. UPS won’t let you open to inspect I think…
