I am not just shooting out my butt here, UTI blockages are life threatening and if you wait until the cat is toxic, your chances hit rock bottom quick.
Way I see it, alarmist is definately in Tristin’s best interest…if I am wrong and I pray I am, then it won’t hurt anything, but if I am right, then the sooner he gets care the better his chances, and I really feel that waiting will be detrimental.

I’m a certified vet tech with four years experience, I know the risks, thank you, but there’s no need to make TC feel horrible about an already bad situation.
She has an appointment with the vet tomorrow. It is the best that she can do right now. It could also be giardia, coccidia, kidney failure, IBS, poisoning, feline leukemia since he’s not vaccinated, FIP or any number of things. She would know if he was having trouble urinating/blocked because he would be in the box crying and trying to pee. Right now he’s probably not peeing at all because he’s dehydrated.
Once again, good luck TC. I wish your kitty the best.
Rusti,
I was not trying to make TC feel worse, I was trying to impress how critical this could be, and that delaying treatment could mean the loss of her kitty.
I also entertained the possiblity of the feline leukemia, etc. The symptoms described sound like toxicity to me, so I looked at the most common cause in male cats. However, you are right, his symptoms could be many things.
I hope that waiting doesn’t affect his outcome, and that seeing the vet tomorrow will get some answers and help kitty recover from whatever it is. I would feel better if he had been able to see a vet today, but I understand the limitations with transport, etc.
I hope your vet bill isn’t too high.
TC, to answer your question earlier about surgery, depending on what is done, often same day return home is possible, depending on what drugs they used to knock the pet out and the procedure being done. Neutering for example is a 10 min procedure and the cat is usually just gassed, which the cat can burn out of his system in about 20 mins after awakening.
I did think of one other possible, he could have an intestinal blockage from a hairball, which would cause the vomiting and refusal to eat. Is he a long haired cat?

June 28, 2007 at 1:01 am #592740I think it’s best we just wait now and see what the vet has to say. 🙂 Vomiting in a cat can be just about anything. Internet diagnosing doesn’t really help anyone, kitty should always see a vet before assumptions.
She says he seems to be keeping liquids down now, so he should be OK until tomorrow morning. Animals, especially puppies and kittens (since this fellow is young) are healing machines!

I had to pay for a vet visit and pills and now that he is on the new food he is as good as new. Do you feed him indoor cat food? I was told that something in that food was what caused his crystals. How old is he??
I did feed him indoor cat food but I just recently switched them to and 80% wet food so that they get more water in their diet which has turned into 100% wet food in the last week… He is not even a year yet… like 11 months… I hope getting him in tomorrow morning won’t be too late…
I don’t understand this whole “no over night” stuff… what if an animal has to have surgery?? Do you just take home you pet after the surgery??? That’s stupid if you ask me…
If I remember correctly Kovu was about 2 when he got his crystals. You shoudl get him in ASAP because not going #1 will poison the body. Good luck let us know what happensJune 28, 2007 at 2:07 am #592742Kyrin wrote:Rusti wrote:Kyrin wrote:I worked for a vet for 2.5 years, in that time I had two male cats brought in with the symptoms described, they died in my arms while we were trying to save them.

I have considered that it might be a hairball blockage since he seems to be doing ok with liquids… He is a long haired cat… I just want to get this over and delt with so that I know he is going to be ok… I have added some protein power, high quality vet food (wet) to the chicken broth and I was thinking of adding some vitiman oil that I have incase he does have a blockage.. My boyfriend took tomorrow off so he’s coming to the vet with me..
June 28, 2007 at 3:10 am #592743I have not read every post. too long and I don’t quite have the energy. How is your kitty doing?
and have you switched him back to dry food? you had siad you were feeding him wet food…how long ago was that? I wonder if it could have been some of that tainted Kitty Chow.
I have 10 cats at the moment..and though out my short life I have had almost 20…I have never had a cat that seriously sick…and cat’s do NOT get sick like humans do…no strep throat or flue that they get over. If a cat or any animal behaves in such a manner as you describe, there is something medically wrong that they will need help with. what you describe is simaler to the symptoms of a poisoned cat. Does he ever catch mice or birds? if he ate part of a mouse that had eaten poison, it can cause the same symptoms.
I hope your kitty gets better.

the kitty has an apointment with the vet tomorrow to see what’s wrong with him… he has stopped throwing up and is more interest in the food I am force feeding him… As for the food I got a list of good foods and bad foods from the vet and made sure I had a good food…

showing interest in the food is a good thing at least. do update us with what the vet says.
June 28, 2007 at 4:55 am #592746I am glad you got an appt. I am anxious to hear what they say.

That’s a great sign! You are doing real well by him. I’m sorry your boyfriend needed a kick in the rump to understand that this is serious, but you have been doing good. 🙂 We are all hoping for you and your cat! 😀

My art: featherdust.comJune 28, 2007 at 3:32 pm #592748Hopefully everything is ok at the vets this morning! Poor kitty!
As a side note
As a pet owner you can save a considerable amount of money and protect your pets at the same time if you are willing to vaccinate them at home. This can be done easily for any healthy pet. Also, this saves the animal from the stress (for cats anyway) of being put in the carrier and driven to the vet’s office. I usually just walk up to them, pet them and then administer the shot. Animal’s skin is not like ours and usually they never even know that it has been done.
I have been vaccinating my own cats, dogs and horses for about 20 years now and only once, one cat had a a negative reaction. I found out later, at the vet’s office that was probably caused by being too “cheap” and buying generic vaccines.
Of course with as many animals as I have and as freaky as I am about their health and well being, vaccinations are the only thing that I save money on! I take these guys to the vet EVERY time that I think they “look/act funny”! My vet loves me! 😆June 29, 2007 at 1:45 am #592749please up date us on how your kitty is doing and what the vet tells you
June 29, 2007 at 5:51 am #592750Ok update…
We took the kitty to the vet first thing this morning and explained everything.. When we first got there he started meowing which is something I haven’t heard him do since he started throughing up.. The vet figures that it’s not a crystal block because he isn’t having problems peeing… he asked about kittys toys and I remembered while cleaning the other day that I found… you know those little winnie the pooh in like a little rubber costume… well I collect those and I know the cats like to chew on them so I try to keep them boxed up where they can’t find them but the ferrets drag them out… anyway I found a pooh with out his costume and then I found part of his costume… So all in all we think he might have been chewing on it and swallowed some and it blocked his stomach or something… so they wanted to keep him for the day to force feed him (still not eating himself) and see if he would throw it back up… if he did then there was a good chance the something was still blocking him and they would do an xray… but luckly he didn’t throw it up so we are hoping that whatever might have been blocking him is slowly moving through… They gave him a mild lax to help, a pill to make him feel hungry, and gave me some food to force feed him but when we got home I fed my cat and he jumped in on the eating and now has way more energy… so whatever the problem was I think it is moving it’s way through and it won’t cost me $1000… just $200… I’m glad he is ok though…
Sorry that is so long..
June 29, 2007 at 6:16 am #592751I’m glad the kitty is better.
June 29, 2007 at 6:50 am #592752Awesome! So glad he is better.
June 29, 2007 at 7:44 am #592753I’m glad he is feeling better but keep us updated until he is fully recovered
