Uh I think I put this in the correct category..

Anyways I ordered a dragon candle lamp windstone listed as “new”and mint off of ebay and it showed up with multiple nicks and chips and a chunk broke from the left wing about the size of a quarter (a bit bigger). I think it was from poor packaging, but the seller had 100% sell rating with over 700 feedback. It says on her page that she takes returns but I pay return shipping.I paid 14 shipping to get it here, so thats like 30 out of pocket for a broken piece.

I’ve never had an ebay issue before and am not sure what to do. I messaged her, but does anybody have any advice for this kind of situation? Should I return it or just try and fix it myself, cause it sure isn’t mint anymore…

I have read posts from others who have had the same experience as you which is unfortunate. Did you ask the seller to double box your piece? Does it look like it chipped in shipping or does it look like the piece was already damaged before shipping? Was it double boxed? Do you have postal insurance on it? One option is to ask the seller for a partial refund to cover repairs and keep the item and repair it or send it to be repaired. You would have to get quotes on what this would cost and let them know and if they have insurance and it was broken in shipping they can file a claim with the postal company and refund you or if it was their fault they would have to refund you from their own money. Otherwise you could ask for a full refund but usually you would have to pay to ship it back which is annoying.

If the seller doesn’t cooperate, you can file a claim on ebay asking for a partial or full refund and they will have respond to your claim to come to a solution. My best advice is ask questions before you bid on anything. Get it in writing if the item has any damage or not. Even if a listing says it’s mint, it’s good to ask anyway before bidding if it has any chips or damage they didn’t notice at first. Also ask them if they are familiar with double boxing and ask them to please double box your item to prevent it getting broken in the mail. I like to ask sellers to bubble wrap the item well and then find a box just big enough for it to fit in and then find another box a little bigger for it to fit in surrounded by packing peanuts. If they have a response indicating they don’t know how or won’t do this, I avoid bidding on or buying the item unless they agree to shipping them double boxed.

I sell a lot on eBay. I only make the buyer pay return shipping if it arrives safely, the buyer just changed their mind about it and want to send it back. If it’s defective or broken during shipping it should be the seller’s responsibility to pay for the return shipping (that’s one of the reasons that eBay recommends insuring all packages, so neither party is out any money if it breaks in the mail.)
I’m pretty sure that is what the 14 day returns/ buyer paid return shipping means, it only applies when the buyer doesn’t want the item, not when it arrives damaged. In your case, I don’t think you should have to pay for any of it.

oik, but do i just contact the sellar or ebay? i’m not quite sure what all i should do, and say i returned, would I (with reason) get my first shipping back?

oops that came up right as i posted. I think it broke in shipping cause the the large chunk is till there, but none of the small chips were. I looked very closley at the pics and desription and there were no chips or anything…not it was not double boxed, just bubble wrap and paper ina very thin priority box. standard shiiping… and I paid 56.97. is a repair gonna go over this with shipping and all?

I have had this problem with some sellers. First try to work with the seller if he has 100% on comments he is a good seller, most likely he will make it right. If you sent it back you will most likely get the price and shipping back. Some time they don’t want it back and just sent your money. If the seller won’t take can of it then go to e-bay, they will check it out and give you your money back. If you sent pictures of it. Also sent pictures to the seller you can do this when you sent the e-mail through e-bay. I hope this helps you.

I would message the seller and describe the damage and say you can e-mail pictures if they want to see the damage. I would point out the chip done in shipping but also mention it appears the other chips were there before shipping and ask if they can refund maybe half what you paid or what you think is fair if you want to keep it and fix it. You can message Kyrin or Drag0nfeathers on here to get quotes of what it would cost to fix but you would have to pay them plus shipping to them and back to get it fixed which can add up so you would have to find out how much that would cost before asking for that amount for a refund. Otherwise you could ask the seller if they will give you a full refund plus your return shipping if you send it back. When you get a full refund it does include your initial shipping cost but technically they do not have to give you the amount for return shipping unless they are good to deal with and choose to. It doesn’t hurt to ask them though if they will do that and just return it and get another one from someone else. Give them a day or two to respond back and if they don’t message you back or won’t cooporate, you would have to open a claim on ebay to get a refund.

If you file a paypal claim you get 100% of your money back, shipping as well. Then they send you a prepaid label to return the item so you are out nothing if the case is found in your favor.

I know this because I got a white emperor dragon that was destroyed upon arrival and the seller fought me. It was obvious to me it didn’t survive the trip even before I opened the box because the box was hardly the size of the dragon I was expecting inside of it.

              I’ve had this happen too.

              1. Make sure you take good photos of the shipping box and materials.
              2. Take very good pictures of the item and damage, including what spare pieces are in the box.
              3. KEEP THE SHIPPING BOX AND MATERIALS IF INSURED. If is was insured, the post office requires you to keep the box since its within their right as part of processing the claim to request you provide the damaged box as proof.
              4. Given the seller’s high rating, work with them first to resolve this before going through EBAY.
              5. In my case, I decided I wanted to keep the broken unicorn and try fixing it; but seller refunded me all my money including shipping and it was insured.
              6. Seller would have paid shipping if I wanted to return it to her, but she would have just tossed the damaged unicorn and I thought he was readily fixable, so I asked and she agreed to let me keep him anyways.
              7. If you’ve never fixed a Windstone before and are interested in trying, he may make a good practice piece too.

I have heard back again and she seems very willing to fix it. I’m sure she wants to keep her 100% rating. I’ll work through her with it and let ya guys know what happens. Thanks for all the tips it has given me alot to think about. It is amazing to see how many others have had similar issues.

So after talking to her about logical solutions and ideas, I have been refunded most of what I paid, and get to keep the pice. I plan on attempting my own repair since it is a small one. Will post pic of progress. Any tips on matching the paint?

Is it the brown one or the white one? I can help you out with paint matching if it’s the stone one, I haven’t worked with the white before.

Also, when you do your repair, I would suggest a material called apoxie sculpt. Works superb for Windstone repairs. Also, with stome finish pieces, I find if you press a dish towl into the sculpt while it is still wet it alomst perfectly matches the stone texture. Good luck!

To Drag0n: It’s the stone. And i have some Magic Sculpt which is basically the same thing as apoxy sculpt. That would be great if you could help.

I’m mostly glad that it is just chips and a small spot, rather than smashed to bits. It could have been much worse and I’m not sure I’d ever be that skilled at repairing to fix it then… here are the chips and the break.

the broken chunk is slightly wider than a quarter.

The edges of the chunk are bent inwards and frayed kinda (does that word make sense?) so i think rather than glue it on with the weak edges i’ll resculpt the part. Thanks for the towel tip Drag0n. Do you have any other tips for apoxy? I’ve only used it once to mount the crystal in the tail on my first small dragon pyo. It’s sticky kinda.

It sticks pretty good to the raw gypsum, I’ve never needed to use anything additional if that’s what you mean. You can still glue the piece back on though. I wouldn’t resculpt the whole thing if you have the piece. For the small cracks and crevices that are left after reattaching it, there are little rubbery tools you can use that look sort of like a flat head screw driver on the end and that will push the sculpting clay deep in the crack. Then, do as I mentioned before and press it with a towel and get it in there real good. Smoothe it if necessary and press it with the towel again. You don’t want it to dry and you end up with a raised area so work with it wil it’s still pliable.

The good thing about the stone sculptures it they are REALLY easy to disguise imperfections. Once you are happy with it let the sculpt dry.

For painting, what I do, is get a dark brown, a burnt yellow, and a burnt sienna sort of color and splotch up the areas that need to be touched up. Sometimes a light tan is good to have as well (I’ve seen stone textures vary in color so you have to accomidate the colors to your specific sculpt) Then, once the area is good and dry, thin out some black you use as antique. Slop it over the area and quickly just wipe it away lightly with your finger until you get the desired result. You want the browns to show through, and the black to stay in the recesses (again, some are more heavily antiqued then others as each painter at the factory has a slightly different style)

Seal it up with a matte acrylic spray and taa daa! All fixed ^_^
