Well, the difference is I do artwork full-time and currently don’t yet have a chilren’s illustration gig this year yet.
There again… so envious of you!!! 😀 I’d love to be able to do my artwork 5 days a week… GAH!!!
One day… when my engineer fiance is pulling in 100 thousand a year… I’ll stay at home to raise the kids… and do artwork.
Yes kids will hamper the artwork… but there will still be time for it. 😀

Yipes! I hope you’re feeling better soon!! I know how taht can effect your drive. 😯
Watergazer wrote:One interesting thing I found out about the famous artist Jody Bergsma…she actually has about a 6 month stay every year in a secondary house where she can focus just on her paintings in sort of seclusion…so the rest of the year she tours and does other things she has to to promote her work. S she paints for a straght half a year and then doesn’t for half a year.
I LOVE her work… DROOL! A friend of mine recently sent me an autographed card by her… Gotta frame it. 😀 I just love the feel and color of her pieces… 😀 gorgeous!
February 23, 2007 at 6:06 pm #542788Gorgeous work, as always, Water!

Hey Water, do you have yourself listed on Trafford’s commission-based Talent Pool for art/illustration? Quite a number of people on there, but given your talent, I could see you getting a good amount of work from that. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t already.

That’s a pretty cool idea, actually (NB: I love Bergsma’s work).
I love hearing about people who don’t follow a typical lifestyle where you do your job 9-5, 5 days a week. There’s this northwest coast artist around here who goes out and essentially ‘lives’ in his kayak for the short summer months, paddling up and down along the coast for incredible distances to paint watercolour scenes, for as long as the winter weather is held at bay. He lives off the land, pays no rent, and then comes back by the first galestorms to work in his rustic studio to finish his initial concepts.
For those with the knowledge and physical ability, I thought the idea was a brilliant and more affordable lifestyle for an artist. Very exciting to see the creative ways people find a living in this world.
February 24, 2007 at 1:54 am #542790I love the black one a lot. Still have to decide on what to do for the Ki-Rin trade. You keep on painting more so it is harder to decide.
February 24, 2007 at 3:25 am #542791Actually, I am on the talent pool board. I am listed as the second top illustrator there based on experience if you don’t count the cover graphic desigher that’s up there as well. I have one more book they need to put after my name yet…I should call them on that tomorrow, but yes, that’s where 99% of my children’s book illustration gigs come from!
I am familiar with artists who live off the land. I was amazed to hear a story of one who used to live in a teepee, then made himself a hobbit-style home inside a hill and essentitally pays no real rent and such. It’s amazing to see people not living by what society deems a “norm” of exsistance and I would love to incorporate more of that into my life and getting rid of the major stresses of life. Never know.
Bergsma also has at least one children’s book series out now…did you know? She probably has more actually. I have them but would have to look up the titles but they star a dragon in one, and a wizard prince with a unicorn in another. Very awesome art.
February 24, 2007 at 3:59 am #542792I have the Bergsma books. The artwork is fabulous. 😀
February 24, 2007 at 4:13 am #542793Ah ok, I thought you might be on there already. Looks like Jennifer Taylor’s the other ‘top’ artist you mentioned (she does whole books as well as covers). She’s a friend of mine whom I worked with, and she lives just a short distance away. Very nice girl. You and her both do great children’s book illos, and you both deserve all the work you attract on there! Maybe I’ll list there when I get better at colour illustration and have more of an art portfolio to display one day…
Yeah the alternative mode of life inspires me as well. I have done away with a lot of the ‘needs’ society and media made me feel were important to me. Since I can’t count on a high or consistent income, it’s all for the better anyway. I do feel less stress overall, not always trying to achieve or acquire these ‘things’ that really don’t have meaning to me personally. I look forward to a rural homestead with our own organic garden, energy-self-sufficient home, some chickens, etc. I’m no city person, that’s for sure. 😉
Actually, speaking of alternative living… Jennifer’s been living in a converted chicken coop on her mother’s property for years, with electricity, water, etc. I’ve never been in it, but apparently it’s a pretty swanky coop! I think I want a hobbit-hole though! That’d be awesome.
Yes indeed, I’ve seen Jody Bergsma’s kids books (both titles you mentioned)! Her style is so lovely, and dreamlike. I’m also a big fan of Nene Thomas and Amy Brown and have been eyeing their art books too.
Anyway, I’ve hijacked your ki-rin thread enough! BTW, I adore your black and bronzed ki-rin best I think (though the white makes a lurvely pairing). The blue was a neat idea too. But I keep getting distracted by that black…. so striking.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I had to git to work QUICK LOL or I was gunna be late! Anyhow, I was in the hospital because my feet, ankles and calves had swelled up like grapefruits! They did EVERY test under the sun…from, EVERYBLOOD test known to MAN 😆 👿 , ultrasounds on BOTH legs, and an EKG. The only thing they could confirm was the fluid retention in my legs. BUT as far as the cause….NOPE, couldnt find a thing! I am healthy as a HORSE! MAKES NO sense, that really is sooo strange and freaks me out when they cant find the problem. Then again the Doctors here got thier PHD outta a cracker jack BOX! 👿 😆 Anyhow, went to my regular doctor, and he put me on a diuretic(sp?), that at least got rid of the fluid retention, but my legs still HURT REAL bad. SUX….ANYHOW think maybe oneday we can do a trade Water? Whatever youd like. 😉 😀
Oh, you and anyone else that may read this, My “Spirit Wolf” didnt sell on Ebay, anyone that would be of interest go ahead and PM me. I am even willing to do a trade for her. I would prefer money though, as I stated above, I am going to have ONE HELL of a hospital bill and dont know how I am going to pay for it! ANYTHING you would care to offer would help! 😥 😯 😥 Thanks guys! 😀

Hmm, is it possible that you have blood clots? But then again…the ultrasounds would of caught that.February 24, 2007 at 9:10 pm #542796Yea, they checked for blood clots but didnt find any in both of my legs. They checked from the VERY top of my legs (crotch area LOL) ALL the way down to my ankles….all they saw was the fluid in my legs. But couldnt diagnose what was causing the fluid to build up like that. VERY strange.
March 2, 2007 at 7:06 am #542797March 2, 2007 at 7:43 am #542798Yes, congrats! I was high bidder for a very short time, lol! I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford it though. 😥
March 2, 2007 at 4:20 pm #542799Wow, that is awesome. Congrats water.
March 2, 2007 at 4:44 pm #542800Thanks guys, it was really a pick-me-up, though I’ll have to see how my auctions go over the next few pieces I do. I don’t know if I want to keep painting or not right now, so I’m just using my stock up. I will probably do one last one in the gold and black theme in dragon form too.
Also, I need to contact that commissioner. I had an issue with a new finish I was trying and it was super glossy…not matte like the photo. I need to see if she’ll still want it.

You might be able to apply another matte clear coat to bring down the gloss. Melody did that on one piece I got from Windstone, and it worked perfectly. You probably want to experiment on some scrap material first to see if that’d work with whatever finish that it has now.
