Speaking as one who perhaps has less of the creative, free-spirited approach to life, I now find him a bit too clueless and beginning to be annoying. Of course, this also is a compliment to Melody – that I am so engaged with her characters!
Hmmm..
At first it seemed as if Serence was being prejediced and unfairly critical …
-but perhaps Serence was right; Is Kade truly a disastrous choice as a Veligent?
Does a veligent’s job include responsibility for the welfare of the people around him, or only the care of sick and afflicted souls? I expect Kade can cope with an emergency – in his own unique fashion – but everyday life seems somewhat hard on bystanders. 🙂
Edit – (several hours later), still thinking about this … what is the relationship of a veligent to a king? Is he supposed to be the king’s “right hand man”? Emergency troubleshooter? It looked as though Dr. Lark served as the adviser and support for Serence, but I don’t know if that was his job or just their personal relationship.
Well, yes , of course, a Veligent is also a trained physical doctor, who is responsible for the well being of those around him, just as any normal doctor is, but his main role isn’t to worry about physical injuries. He comes from a safe, cushy world where you can turn your toddler loose to explore the woods on his own and not worry, so Kade still doesn’t really comprehend what the real world is like.
You know how, like when you graduate from university you still don’t know how to do your taxes?… or how to invest money? -Or how to change a diaper?
Some important life skills get overlooked in an academic education.
Kade may be a talented, competent Veligent, but bystanders may indeed have a rough road ahead.
A Veligent is critically important to the King, and is supposed to be his advisor as well as managing the health of souls. Yes, his right hand man.
Lark happens to also be Serence’s closest childhood friend, as well as the highest ranking Veligent and founder of the Center Academy.
Kinda like Bones and Captain Kirk.
Kade is supposed to take over part of this fuction. Poor Serence.
Thanks for explaining. I can see that the relationship between Serence and Kade will be MUCH more complex than the usual big brother/little brother dynamic.
If you can stand one more question … is it common for a king and a veligent to be so closely related?
My take on Kade is that he is very much aware of what he is doing, even when he seems like he is being an absentminded clown. I think he is trying to give Serence other things to worry about other than the impending war & other troubles facing the kingdom. I also think that he feels his brother takes things way too seriously & has forgotten how to enjoy life, the beautiful things, pleasure & fun. So he is demonstrating.
I really believe there is more to Kade than what we see, & that Serence & everyone but Ayonah are completely underestimating him.
Kade is saying “Sorry, who?” because he is not supposed to answer to his name? (It took a while to figure this out – I’m a bit slow sometimes).
Yes. He swore he wouldn’t respond to his name, and he sticks with it.
Stupid rules cause nothing but trouble.
Oh Kade, you’re so adorable. XD

Wonder which one is right.

No it isn’t common. In fact, this is the first time it has been tried.
