I had some of these when I was younger. Sadly, I no longer have them. I was thinking about getting a few again so I went to eBay and searched for a few minutes and noticed prices were all over the place. What makes some models more valuable than others?

        I was wondering that myself.

I collected in the early 1970’s through about 1984 or so, and I have have some that have been boxed up (not original boxes though) that I was thinking of selling, and I don’t have a clue what a decent start price would be on eBay. I used to have almost 200 at my collecting peak, but in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I got the count down to maybe 20, which I had liked a lot of the ‘Traditional’ Breyer model horses.

Price depends upon the rarity of the Breyer.
Some are production pieces and no matter how old or well kept, there are a lot of them and so they are not worth as much.

Then you have pieces that are made to be sold at just certain stores such as Sears or Tractor Supply Company. Those can be worth a bit more as they will have more unique paint jobs.

The ones that are painted specifically for Breyerfest each year are higher priced as you need to be at Breyerfest in order to get them unless you buy them from someone selling theirs. Breyer seems to release about 1200 a year of the special paint jobs of the Breyerfest models. They may paint 2 or 3 different models with special paints jobs for Breyerfest. There are usually a few people on eBay that go to Breyerfest and buy several of each paint job just so they can sell them later.

Then you get into the ones worth even more, the Breyer Premiere or the Breyer Connoisseur. These are sold by Breyer only to people in the Breyer Premiere or Breyer Connoisseur clubs. Typically they are made in runs of 500 or less. A lot of times new sculpts may be released into these clubs first. When they come up for sale on eBay they can go for some pretty high prices.

Or you can get into the custom paint jobs and those are worth what you are willing to pay for a OOAK paint job.

This is just a basic rundown. I am sure others have more information than I do. But I have collected Breyers since I was 8 years old. I still have several of the ones I was gifted when I was a child.
        Hope it helps!

        Looking for:
"COSMIC SHIFT DRAGONS and KI-RINS" and the "OCTOPUS TANUKI TEST PAINT #1"

Thanks for the info! That explains some those pieces selling for over $100.

eBay tends to have overinflated prices. There is a great site, Model Horse $ales Pages. Those prices tend to reflect more the current value of pieces. Especially if it is something that came out recently, there tends to be several people who will turn around and resell them. Special pieces that were offered web only, or email only. I just snagged one of the ones that they put up on Christmas Day that was a gamblers choice of two colors (like a grab bag). Model was $95, and there were only 350 of each color. Current resell is about $150ish. Might come down, might not. If there is anything in particular you are looking for, PM me and I can give you a hand. You can check Breyers site for the regular runs and their prices, then head over to MH$P and you can probably get one from someone at least $10 cheaper.

Love baby kirins, safari poads, mini keepers, and anything BLUE, BLUE, and, oh yes, BLUE.

Yes, this! I was going to suggest MH$P, but you beat me to it. 🙂

In addition to regular production Breyers, you can also find customised Breyers, Peter Stone model horses AND artists’ resins, so it’s a great place to browse around if you’re thinking of getting back into the collecting groove – you can see what kinds of things have come out since you were involved, and compare-contrast with other related options!

Interested in buying or trading for: GB Pebble Sitting Red Fox in dark grey, Lap Dragon Test Paints (Water Sprite, Glacial Pearl, Opulence, Pastel Rainbow, and many others - see my Classifieds ad), Blue Morpho OW, GB Pebble Loaf dragons in blue/aqua/teal, and Griffin Test Paints (Black Rainbow or Frosted Jade).

                Yep, Breyer is still around.

Value changes depending on production rate/number, scarcity, and condition.

So I finally got my very first Breyer horse.

I got a Brookside Pink Magnum pony.

I paid slightly less than $30.00 CAD (which comes to about $20.00 USD) shipping and taxes included, what do you guys think? Was that a good price?

I know there’s nothing special about this one, it’s regular run and has been out since 2012 but I really like the mold and the color as well. I guess we’ll see how I like it “live”! 😉

I have that one too, he’s adorable isn’t he. I know some people don’t like the purple kind of Bay roan that Breyer does but I love it! And yes, that’s a good price, I’m pretty sure that’s around how much I payed for mine straight from the store.

I don’t have one of that mold yet, but he is adorable looking! I would also agree that is a good price for one of his size.

Wow, that was quick! He just got here and I have to say that I’m very impressed with the quality of the product, especially at this price!

The seams are very discreet, color placement excellent, it has great stability, all 4 feet flush to the ground, nice detailing. I’m very happy with the purchase.

I’m glad you’re happy with your little purple pony! He was my first traditional size Breyer I ever bought, every time I passed by him in the store I couldn’t help picking up the box and falling in love with the color, now he sits on top of my desk with his adopted foal hehe.

This one is actually a lot less purple than some of the pictures I’ve seen.

It may depend on the batch, or maybe on the lighting, I’ll see tomorrow in natural light… They are lovely, either way. 🙂

I have to say I prefer this (pony) size over the larger traditional horses, although I may buy one, just to see, if I can get a good deal. And if I don’t like it, I’ll just go to the back up plan that I had for this one… give it to my niece! 😉

Yeah, mine is closer to the second more purple photo. There’s another purple-ly roan model I really really want, a BF Special Run ‘Tunbridge Wells’, just haven’t had the money yet to buy yet, but I’m thinking I’ll get him this year for sure!

I am a Breyer horse collector, though I went on a rather prolonged hiatus and only started slowly collecting again in the last year.
