I’m curious since this topic has come up a couple times in different threads. How many people here use special auto paint for their PYOs? The kinds that are color shift, or have very neat effects, like a rainbow sheen? What have your experiences using them been like?
I know that Kujacker uses stuff called “Prizmacoat”
http://alsacorp.com/products/prizmacoat/prizma_prodinfo.htmAnd Drag0nfeathers apparently uses Dupli-Color Clear Effex from Advance Auto Parts.
https://www.duplicolor.com/products/effex/I know a lot of the products are either in an aerosol can or meant to be applied by airbrush, but I’m wondering if the product is the latter and comes in a bottle if it’s not possible to thin them out and paint them on? Even if it meant ruining a brush or two designated for the purpose. Reason being, I can’t get aerosol cans shipped to me here in Japan.
I’m actually kind of tempted to go down to an auto supply store or DIY store here sometime to see if I can’t find anything like these products, but I’ve had some bad experiences lately from not being able to read warning labels in Japanese, and I’m worried that even if I do manage to find something it will either be potentially inappropriate for application on gypsum or prohibitively expensive (because most things in Japan have their prices inexplicably raised).
July 30, 2014 at 12:09 pm #916727I would also be very interested in a type that may be applied by brush, since I don’t have an air brush and I might only want to apply the special paint to parts of my PYO and not the entire piece. I found a mixable powder form of special and Chameleon auto paints from ‘Paint With Pearl’ and ‘Dip Your Car’ – they have powders available on Amazon and online: http://www.paintwithpearl.com/
There was also a series of YouTube videos on using the stuff – here’s one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGdjWLan6hc
Has anyone used this?

August 14, 2014 at 6:32 am #917488Is it really worth it investing in an airbrush for sculpts? I’ve always been a tad hesitant, I don’t know if I can get in the detail I’d want with an airbrush, it just appears a little unpredictable to me.

Thanks! Maybe I’ll just try using the Automotive shifting paints as ‘base’ coats and paint the accent/detail colors with acyrlic metallic paints. 🙂

You can get it in aerosol cans AND in vials that are made for use in an airbrush. I get it in the vials and brush it on. You can see how it ends up looking on the Foo Dad I painted for the 2014 Spring/Summer Swap (and my personal PYO thread). I used different color shifts on his horns and chain. I’ve only used it as accents, so I can’t say how it would look if you painted large areas of a PYO with it. Also, don’t use a brush you adore with this stuff. It leaves a residue that’s difficult to remove from the brush. All in all, I like Spaz Stix brand. Plus, their website shows pictures of what each paint looks like once it’s applied.

Unless you plan on using the airbrush a great deal I would not initially invest in one. I’d suggest doing some research on them first. I’m not sure what kind of maintenance they require to stay in good shape.

by my experiance, airbrushing is not somthing you can just pull out and use for an hour and be done. generally when i get mine out it become an all day thing so i usually try to get as much as i can done. just between putting stuff together and mixing paints, and setting up the hood and then cleaning up everything when i am done and cleaning my airbrushes real well, it is more work than you would think. acrylicsyou can just get out and out a way in short time, it take s longer with an airbrush.
