So how about on the same idea of Blue Morpho, but instead of the deep blue and turquoise, it’s a dark and light orange. Not copper, or gold, but a flat orange (sparkly metallic is fine, but not like a metal metallic, if that makes sense) The black and white would remain the same and then what do you get?
Can you already picture it?
If you can, do you also see a great new color you could call Monarch? ^_^
I’ve always wanted orange dragons and there are so few. Lots of coppers and golds, but barely any orange. They would look spendid with those soft green or bright blue eyes I bet <3 At least the way I am picturing it in my head they would! LOL! So pretty!!!

Also (just a side thought): What if we were to replace the black with silver, and include some fire-red? It might look like heated metal from a forge. It would also include those silver horns that Windstone is currently using.
I love your original idea, though! 🙂

June 14, 2014 at 9:15 pm #914147Fire red was a retired color. It had instability issues I think…I would love to see a monarch like theme, or maybe some similar to blue morpho but with tints and/or undertones of violet with blue.

Email me for current prices! awier(@)weaselsoneasels.comJune 14, 2014 at 10:16 pm #914148I posted a thread the other week with a similar thought about blue morpho, but with yellow-greens. Something like the old green dragons but with areas of yellow, yellow eyes, and gold accents. I’m not sure about the over all feeling of another green-ish dragon considering there are the old greens, emeralds, and a few stand alone green curlies like elven and serpentine. The current greens are nice, but not my taste as I don’t like the orange or red eyes with green. To each their own, right?
Also, could somebody fill me in on the issues with red fire? I didn’t know about Windstone until this year! RF has become my favorite color scheme next to blue morpho, but I keep reading little bits of info about how it didn’t work out and how that color, along with ruby, will never be made again. I wish I had known about red fires and Windstone back when they were in production. I’ve been trying to obtain my fav. sculpts (OW & Lap) in RF, but they’re either way out of my price range or too rare. Are they really worth 2-3 times their original cost? Seems like a hopeless endeavor. :(( Not trying to rant here, just an honest question. :~
That being said, I do like the orange monarch idea too. Wouldn’t it be cool to see a line of butterfly/moth color schemes in limited production? I’d imagine that would be labor intensive, but it’s fun to think about. Maybe a butterfly/moth grab themed grab bag would be easier. I’d like to see something done like a luna moth.

I think any item’s “worth” is rather a nebulous thing. Yes, there are production costs to consider that goes into the item’s creation (the cost of the materials to make the mold and the labor; the cost of the gypsum; cost of tools to paint and then labor, cost of shipping, overhead costs of the facility and maintaining the website) but an item’s actual *worth* long term is something that has to do with the more nebulous idea of supply and demand.
If demand is high and supply is low, then sellers and resellers are free to ask what they see fit/what “sticks”. However, the demand market is then free to evaluate that price and decide either a) the asking price is too high or b) the asking price is right, and that comes down to a personal choice: what is it “worth” to you, the buyer? I think it’s okay to decide either way. After all, a couple hundred dollars can let you go on a small vacation. It could be several very nice meals out with a movie afterward. It could be money you need to repair a car or to go toward a new computer or art supplies or a gym membership or a number of other hobbies. If you decide that that particular asking price is not worth it to you, you could see if they’re willing to negotiate, or you can watch and wait to see if they drop the price on their own later. If people become desperate to sell something for whatever reason, sometimes they will do that.
I think it’s worth noting that lap dragons haven’t been available for something like 3 years, and since they were last around, the value of the dollar has changed. Production costs may have also changed. Melody or one of the other staff members mentioned that when the production lap dragons come back, they will have had their prices adjusted / raised for current conditions. The blue morpho lap was 250 dollars, and is known to be limited production (*how* limited, no one knows just yet). So perhaps thinking on all that will help you weigh the decision better.
–As for the actual thread’s topic! I imagine that a Monarch theme would be very lovely indeed. However, orange is for me a very iffy color and one I don’t always like (as opposed to blues, which I nearly always enjoy). I’d have to see it in action to know whether or not I liked it. Also, I think someone suggested doing a scheme based on pink moths, and honestly I think I might like that even more than monarchs.
June 15, 2014 at 1:44 am #914152Those ideas sound pretty. 🙂
96037 –– ‘Fire red’ is not a retired color; that’s ‘red fire’. I’m just trying to describe the shade of red that might appear on a dragon.

We are limited by the pigments that are available… there is no metallic orange, far as I can find ( no metallic true red either).
I have mixed flat orange with copper to achieve something like that… you’d get a “Monarch butterfly” color. I have painted some Grab bags unicorns like that! Copper and orange wing -backs, with a black belly and silver and blue spots.
Yeah, we should test paint some dragons like that too.June 15, 2014 at 2:20 am #914155Also, could somebody fill me in on the issues with red fire? I didn’t know about Windstone until this year! Red fire and ruby were retired because the pigments being used in the reds at the time were unstable. The red fire dragons were prone to fading in the sun (they turn orange if exposed to sunlight) and some of the ruby pigments were VERY prone to running/rubbing. None of the reds should get wet, but certain rubies would have color transfer just from touching.
Ruby was in production for more time if I recall as it was somewhat less prone to issues (most people don’t dunk Windstones), but I think Red Fire was only in production for about a year.
Both colors have been retired on all the sculpts they were originally painted on, so you won’t see those colors directly from Windstone on any of the sculpts they were already released on – they don’t unretire colors as far as I know.
New sculpts (baby dragons, new hatchers, etc) _could_ potentially be put out in those colors if they could mix a more stable red to achieve a similar shade, but I don’t know if they have been able to do that with the reds they have. I think drag0nfeathers was able to come pretty close to Ruby when she visited.
However, for OWs and Laps, you will not see those in production in Ruby or Red Fire, so it’s up to you if they are worth the higher second-hand price to you. 🙂
June 15, 2014 at 2:38 am #914159I’ve seen some test paints in red. Is it possible that new red colors – perhaps with silver – may be achieved?

June 15, 2014 at 8:13 am #914184That’s funny you should mention that Drag0n as I painted something like that. You will see it at some point. I think Monarchs would be cool. I had mentioned before I loved the looks of pink or pink and yellow moths like the Rosy Maple Moth. Melody have you seen those ones or would you try test painting any like that too? I really want to see pink dragons or pink and yellow!

Windstone painted pink Lap Dragons as Limited Production. Those sometimes show up in the Classifieds – in fact one was there last I looked. Or you could go to “Postponed Production” and hit the “Notify” button.
June 15, 2014 at 3:48 pm #914197I sort of thought Violet Flame was the “new red” no? I mean, it’s not red, but it’s pretty close, and I think far prettier the Ruby or Red Fire was.
Many of the red test paint dragons from ebay come with a “disclaimer” in the auctions too telling you to keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent paint discoloration.

Since there haven’t been orange dragons before, those would be cool and especially popular for Halloween I would think! That pink lap is so pretty but I have no room for big dragons. I am hoping Melody will paint the rest of the sculpts in the same pretty pink colour at some point!
