I hope everyone up in the Ontario, Quebec and northern NY areas are ok. We got a bit of ice last night (nothing much at my house, just enough to put a nice thin sheen over everything), but I know it just gets worse as you go north of me and there are many power outages much further north. If it’s like the last big ice storm back over a decade ago, power was out for a while (there are still trees in the Adirondacks that for miles that died off and lack smaller branches because everything broke off except for thicker support branches). Brampton, Ontario was reporting more than an inch of ice with trees split down to the trunk from so much weight. I think parts of western NY and down into the Ohio river valley were also affected to at least some degree.
Hoping everyone up that way is safe and warm. 🙁

I was supposed to leave to go to my parents’ yesterday, but I’m waiting the weather out! Maybe tomorrow afternoon…
December 23, 2013 at 1:52 am #906802Yeeeeaaah, I’m north of Brampton… The branches and trees are breaking. We’ve been without power since about 2am this morning. We got a fire going and got a generator as soon as the stores opened. Orangeville, the city closest to us, has power, so gas is available.
We can heat and turn on lights, but there’s not enough juice to get the water going (we have a well), or to get anything running on 230 volts going, so no stove or… Showers!
It’s minus 2 C, and it finally stopped raining, so the hydro crews should be able to restore power without more crap falling. they’re hoping to have things up by tomorrow night.
If only it had been one or two degrees colder, it would have snowed and things would have been fine 🙂
I remember the ice storm in 1998 – in Toronto, we were fine, but my in-laws in Ottaw were without power for at least over a week. It just would not stop raining and the temperature wouldn’t go low enough for snow. I’m really glad the same thing won’t happen here!

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmDecember 23, 2013 at 3:06 am #906803Yeah, I remember the storm from 1998 as well. It was icy and nasty here (very pretty for photos, but horrible for powerlines and trees), but so much worse north. I remember seeing the really large powerlines (the ones on the big metal structures running multiple lines bundled) that were just crumbled over to the ground a mess of folded/crushed metal because of the weight. Seeing photos from Brampton this morning just really made me remember that storm. It was a nasty one. 🙁
Glad to see people are ok and checking in. I know there are a few more members up in that neck of the woods as well. No showers is ‘roughing it’, but definitely glad you have heat and some power at least, especially at this time of year!
December 23, 2013 at 3:29 am #906805Ha ha! If it snows for one evening , we all freak out around here!
December 23, 2013 at 4:01 am #906813That’s rotten luck DM!
They’ve been threatening power outages here as well, but I’ve been lucky so far.
I hope you get your power back soon!

That’s weird and i hope people are okay and don’t have to do without power for long! We have a ton of snow here and we couldn’t even get down the street to park in front of our house because we would just get stuck. I had to push my mom’s truck out of the snow about 5 days in a row last week and finally it started getting compacted a bit to at least make groves in the street. We still had a ton of snow they didn’t plow though along the parking sides of the street so I shoveled all the snow off the street in front of our house into a big pile and it’s about 4 feet tall there. At least we can park the truck on the street now though since we don’t have a garage or anything. We were around -20 the last couple weeks off and on and now it’s -4 so it’s gotten better. Ever year I wonder how I manage to live here as I hate the cold! As I sit here typing I have a little heater warming my feet at my desk.

December 23, 2013 at 2:45 pm #906851In my area of Toronto, we’ve got about an inch of ice covering pretty much everything. My trees are ok, with only a few small branches down. Everything is starting to crackle as the branches sway in the slight breeze. A little further down our street, the neighbours aren’t as lucky. There is a lot of damage with trees and even fences down.
We’ve been ok power-wise. Thank goodness. Nothing helps me cope like a good cup of coffee 😉
Fortunately, it’s nothing like the ice storm that hit eastern Ontario back in ’98. Here, anyway.
I hope that my Ontario and Quebec buddies are all ok, safe and warm. It’s definitely a case of “don’t go out unless you have to.”
Life is beautiful.
December 23, 2013 at 5:54 pm #906858We were right at the freeze/rain line and it rained atop about 2′ of snow here, all day. 2′ of snow meltwater + 2″ of rain all coming off the hills was more than our creeks and rivers could handle. We’re experiencing flooding right now. Not at my home, but the area in general.

My art: featherdust.comDecember 23, 2013 at 6:12 pm #906859Here in Chicagoland we were very lucky. It rained a lot Friday and Saturday causing some black ice to accumulate on pavement. I did see a man slip after he got off a commuter train (thankfully he was young and seemed unhurt). Overnight Saturday to Sunday the rain turned into a wet snow. Today there was a light fluffy snow coming down. But really, we had nothing bad happen like loss of power or ice on everything.
December 24, 2013 at 1:11 am #906890Here in Utah we’ve had a gob of new snow on top of old snow so lots of avalanche warnings going out. The SLC airport was closed for two days ’cause they couldn’t keep runways cleared and we had planes skidding all over the place on landings O-o! Hope everyone can stay nice and toasty warm!

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmDecember 26, 2013 at 4:46 am #906935Oh I didn’t know you were still without power. That’s not good! Hopefully it’s restored soon! You never know how much you appreciate things like hot water until it’s gone. We once went through a winter with no heat or hot water because of some house problems but we had power so had to use electric heaters all over the house and shower at the swimming pool showers down the street. We had to wash everything in the house with cold water or heat water in the microwave. When we had hot water and heat again after everything was fixed, I was so grateful!
