August 22, 2013 at 12:48 am #901681I am really tired today. So I talked to a couple of freinds who used to be EMS, an have heard all sorts of stuff. So to start…
Yesterday afternoon, I was riding my bike home from the store, and was hauling my trailer with a few groceries. I had been feeling this dull ache in my left rib cage and arm, and as I feel all sorts of abnormal pains all the time, I just kinda ignored it.
You see, two years ago I took a spill in the winter on my bike and hit my head on the curbside of the road as i was pulling into the library. The helmet missed the curb an I stuck just below the edge of it. About an hour later this pain started with some pressure in my head and was followed by the worst pain I had ever felt. It lasted for a couple of days, I was having a severe concussion. At the time I was living in a transitional home and the owner refused to let me go to the hospital, to my mothers later displeasure, and instead gave me multiple anti-inflammatory’s and insisted I was over reacting and faking it. Since then, I have been looking in on the possibility of fibromyalgia, but to date it has been stated as post-concussive myalgia’s. (in English, i have pains for unknown reason, only that they may have been related to a past concussion). So anyways, I have felt minor pains, aches and fatigues ever since, along with the occasional black out and some slightly questionable spasmatic muscular events ( conscious seizures?).Back to the original story. The pains in my ribs started to get really sharp. It felt like some one was stabbing me or a horse was repeatedly kicking my ribs, and the pain started shooting down my left arm. It was strong and incredibly sharp. Every time i felt it, my breath was pulled from me, and I would gasp, my eyes would glaze over and tear up. I started every few minutes. I stopped on the side of the road and called my friend who was working, leaving a message where she she could hear me gasping in pain on my end of the line.
I wasn’t far from home so I tried to keep going on my bike. I suddnly got worse and more frequent, I could barely see or steer my bike, so I called my boss, who said he’s call me back. When He called me back, I was crying and gasping, tears pouring down my face as the pain came over and over agian. He hung up to call a co-worker and good freind to come get me. I got up around the corner and the pain was so bad, I was getting dizzy, I coudn’t see, my vision ws going between being glazed over and black spots and darkness. I stoped, and was stooped over my bike a shiver and spasm racing thoguh my body every few seconds as the pain came. I have never felt anything like it. A car pulled over asked if I was OK. I could barley talk, let alone stand, and stammered out that I had talked to my boss and someone was coming. A passing sheriff stopped and asked what was wrong. He got out of his car and help me off my bike and I crumpled to the ground.
My body was going numb and I was tingling everywhere. I was curled up on the side of the road and i could barly talk and was scared half to death and spasms were rippling through all my muscles. The cop called EMS and my coworker arrived, and called out my name panicked. She thought i had been hit by a car. She sat next to me and all i could manage to whisper was “help me… make the pain stop.please, make it stop” over and over. breathing was hard, I was numb and tingling and coudn’t move. Just felt the spasms and her stroking my head looking scared for my life. An ambulence came. They (the cops and ems and fighfighter kept asking the smae questions. Who are you, when were you born, where are you, who is the president? stuff like that. I managed to give them a bit of my medical history, and they lifted me onto a gurny and into an ambulence. They put an IV in me, attached a bunch of wires and stuff and drove me to the hospital. By then my heart hate was slowing, the pain was fading along with the numbness, and i just tingled a bit as a wave of exauhstion swept over me.
They brought me in and while I was there ran a bunch of tests. They did an EKG, took x rays, and a some other stuff. As soon as it was mentioned of my medical history that I had Bi-polar, they started ignoring the complaints of pain. They started asking questions like if I had ever had an anxiety attck before and stuff like that. Once it was apparent my heart was OK, it was if the pain had never happened. they acted like I had made it up or over reacted. By the time I was discharged, they said I pulled a muscle and had had a panic attack over it. I know that isn’t true. I think I was going into shock over the pain. And that it caused the panic attack or siezure or whatever. But they wouldn’t listen and sent me home.Today I am weak, tired and scared. Scared it will happen again, scared of the pain and scared of being alone. I have a couple of friend who are past EMS, and one who is on the medical team of ski patrol. I nor them have ever heard of a panic attack over a pulled muscle. None of my muscles there are even tight. I see the doctor tomorrow. Everyone I talked to said those are signs of shock, of siezures. If I feel pain every day and I can deal with it, so logically, I have a high pain tolerance, right?
And I Do. So what happened terrifies me, but anyways there is my story I guess.

I thought maybe it sounded like you were having a heart attack or stroke. Have you ever had scans to see if you might have a brain aneurysm? I had a friend who was 25 who started feeling dizzy and sick one night like she had signs of a stroke and it turns out she had a brain aneurysm that ruptured and she died in hospital a couple days later. Not to scare you but she was so young and it is good to find out if you have anything like that, that could be a risk for the future. Other than that it could very well be something else physical or neurological or even a panic attack.
I used to get panic attacks as a child and sometimes the symptoms can be similar to your body going into shock or feeling like you are having a heart attack. At times something that I saw or thought about that would scare me would trigger one and I would get dizzy, almost black out or want to throw up, get chest pains and have trouble breathing. My mom took me to the hospital a few times and every time I went they told me there was nothing wrong with me physically and I looked at them like they were crazy because I had not imagined having severe chest pains. They never told me what they thought the problem was though and it wasn’t until I started studying panic attacks and hypochondria that I realized it was the panic attacks that caused all my suffering and that I could control it.
I learned to reprogram my thinking and reactions to things so when I was in a situation where there was a trigger and I could feel a panic attack coming on, instead of panicking more, I would promptly stop what I was doing, go outside or somewhere away from the situation, sit and breathe deeply and just relax my mind and body. I would calm myself down and become very present and still and tell myself it was all in my head and that I was fine and the panicking would stop and I would be fine. I never had a panic attack since then. Not sure if that helps but definitely look into any potential physical causes first and there is nothing they can find, definitely look into what I mentioned about stopping and preventing panic attacks. I find yoga and meditation, deep breathing and reading self help books can help as well. I would say if you haven’t yet, get and read the books ‘The Power of Now’ and ‘A New Earth’ by Eckhart Tolle that really helped me change my thinking for the better. I hope things get better and you are okay!

August 22, 2013 at 10:36 am #901694Mind, I’ve only had a panic attack once myself, but that doesn’t seem to fit at all. I’m very sorry they just brushed your symptoms off as something psychogical rather than physical. I hope you can find someone more open-minded to look at you. 🙁
August 23, 2013 at 5:01 am #901738Ah..lets see so far I have had an MRI, EKG, X-Rays of chest, photoes of my heart, multiple labs, a referral to a neuorologist for an EEG to check for siezurs (although that has yet to happen). All the tests they have done have been normal, my labs are great, and aside of the pain I am usally pretty healthy aside of some lack of sleep due to night terrors. So I’m pretty shocked by what happened still..
I saw my doctor, and she is stumped. She took some more labs, recommended I try taking some B12 and magnesium supplements for my muscles, and will get back to me tomorrow. She says they may test for ruemetoid arthritis as well as some other things.
aww man..my nasty headache just came back…pressure in the back of head and this ringing pain around the back and sides of my skull..owowow..
