Hello, I am new to the group but have had windstone dragons since the early 80s. I just recently went back to completing the families of the dragons I had. I have also been purchasing some of the newer dragons, including the entire family of black gold. They are Incredible! My question to anyone who has the answer. I the early 80s, I believe 84-85 there were only 4 colors to hit the novelty shops. The Green, Peacock, Brown, and a Red. Does anyone know the name of the original red dragon color? I look at pics online and don’t recognize any of the reds I see today. Any help would be appreciated.
August 4, 2013 at 9:05 pm #901145The original red was called “Ruby” you can see some examples here: http://www.astralcastle.com/windstone/wsframe.htm
Just pick a sculpt and select the ruby color! 🙂
August 4, 2013 at 9:18 pm #901146Hello and welcome Jimsrdy! I though the ruby coloration was much much more recent, it wasn’t out that long before Windstone retired it, but I believe pieces were produced in ‘ruby’ before they were produced in ‘red fire’
I’ve got to admit you have me curious! I started drooling over Windstones a few years later than the mid-80’s, but as far as I know the green and brown dragons were the very very first to be made, with the metallic peacock coming soon after. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve never seen a red dragon from as far back as some of the green and brown ones that didn’t have felt pads on their bottoms.
Then again, Melody and John have mentioned before that certain test pieces and colorations never put into full production were sent to some stores, so maybe there were red ones back then too.
Forever seeking: Blackwatch the raffle Old Warrior, Jennifer Miller's pieces, and GB Baby unis!

Brown and the old Green were the first two colors of dragons. This followed with White, Emerald and Peacock (which was the most popular selling color for Windstone for over a decade, or so I recall being noted here on the forum previously by John or Melody… something like 15-18 years?). No red production colored dragons came out until the 2000s. The first red color was Ruby. Black Gold came out around this time as well, followed by Rainbow, Gold and Red Fire and Emerald Peacock and very recently, some stores carry Amethyst. I recall it being mentioned that there were some ‘red’ dragons appearing long ago (pre-2000s), but this turned out to be an individual who repainted a few and sold them as Red dragons. They were not painted from the factory that way though (from what I recall).
So, any production ‘red’ dragons would either be Ruby or Red Fire and first appeared sometime after 2004.
August 5, 2013 at 3:12 pm #901169I’ll see if I can dig up the photo and post it later, the mother dragon was sold originally in a color that was neither brown or green – something in between. Pam found a catalog page image with a bunch of the original animals and the mother dragon on it. It’s really cool! I’d love to find one of those really old mother dragons! 🙂
August 5, 2013 at 4:34 pm #901172August 5, 2013 at 6:10 pm #901175It’s interesting that you bring up the early Mother Dragon that was not green or brown. On ebay right now there is a green Mother Dragon that has large patches of reddish brown on her flanks and on her wings. She has no felt pad. It looked so strange to me that I went to Astral Castle just to confirm she wasn’t a repaint. Astral Castle has one with less brown patches but still noticable. Check out the one on ebay:
Is this what you were talking about?
August 5, 2013 at 7:46 pm #901177I remember seeing it mentioned before, that before Windstone made the Ruby dragons, someone unscrupulous (or perhaps multiple someones) had been painting dragons red and selling them.

No, the ones from the original line looked even rougher and ran a bit more to the brown than the green. They also had different eyes. I think this one is a green, just one of the many variants of that shade that exist. 🙂
August 5, 2013 at 9:52 pm #901183Sort of a faded, dusty brown with gold eyes. One showed up on ebay once, but it was BIN and someone else grabbed it. 🙁
The Astral Castle Windstone directory shows the original brown mother (image copyright by Astral Castle – I hope it is OK to copy it here).

August 5, 2013 at 11:21 pm #901184Yes I do recall That color of dragon. My first purchase was the green in 1984. At a Store in the mall. prior to the fall tornado that ripped off the roof. That’s how I remember the year. It wasn’t wicks and Sticks but an earlier novelty chain that had started in the 70’s. They carried the green, brown, and the rainbow (the only thing I can think to call the pic). Then they started displaying the red with a yellow belly, and a black dragon. They later set out a gold and a pearl(white) which I still don’t like to this da, because they were al one color except for the neck and nose bridge. 80 bucks was a lot off dough at the time and I had already started collecting the green. By the time I got around with the money the red and black was no more. They did however bring out the Emperor that I had to have.
