      An unintended and unusual coupling between a zebra and a donkey has produced a rare hybrid specimen known as a zonkey.

      Ippo, as the newborn creature is called, was born last week at a small zoo in Florence, Italy. The male zonkey has black and white banded legs like a zebra, but has the face, ears and fur of a donkey.

      Besides “zonkey,” other names for a zebra-donkey hybrid are “zedonk” and “zebroid.” Such hybrids are said to the offspring of a male zebra and a female donkey. When the roles are reversed, the offspring is called a “donkra,” according to the Huffington Post. A donkra was born in 2011 at a zoo in China.

            I had the same exact thought, when I first saw it. But, if Melody painted it, he’d probably be much more colorful!

              Nope – Melody was more restrained back in 2010. 😉

                    I THINK that Melody also painted a Zonkey Grand Unicorn but not the Mother, Male, or Young unicorns to match … and I’m quite sure that the zonkey hatching peg was the only pegasus in that pattern.

                      I love Zonkeys (and zorses).
                      One of our neighbors on the street we lived on in Shadow Hills, California had a pet zonkey. I would watch out our front window as this zonkey was ( gently) pushed, pulled and coaxed to walk up and down the street on a halter… I don’t think they ever managed to halter train it! Wild things.

                        “Zonkey” is gorgeous! But, unlike “Ippo” born in the zoo, Melody adorned “Zonkey” with fine jewelry & gems! He’s got real “pizazz”!

                            Have you ever seen a pic of the wild donkey that domestic ones were bred from? They have stripes on their legs too.

                              Yes, here’s a close-up image of a wild donkey that shows the stiping on legs;
