Over the years, I’ve had older Windstones that were duller than their counterparts, maybe with age, or maybe they were cleaned with something harsh, I don’t know… And I’ve always wondered if I could give them a new glossy clear coat.

In the end I never took the chance and sold them as they were, but I’d like to know if anyone has ever tried it?

I think that the clear coat of the older pieces might have been more matte or satin, and that the newers ones have a glossier finish.

I wouldn’t give them a new one because to me, that difference in finish is part of their charm.

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I know what you mean DM, but I’m really thinking of pieces with a seemingly “damaged” clear coat. For example, to name one with little color variation, I’ve had several emeralds over the years, and while most have always been nice and shiny, I’ve had a Male that had a finish that was really dull in comparison.

I have done this before on some repairs and have had no issues. You need to get every speck of dust off of your existing piece though before hand for obvious reasons. I would first test an inconspicous area first though to be sure you don’t cause any crazing or other issues.

What type of clear coat would you use? I have some hatching dragons where the clear coat on the egg is obviously wearing off and I am wondering what type of coating should be used to replace what has come off.

I’ve had the best results with gare clearcoats, but they are hard to find.

I tend to gravitate towards aresol can sprays vs brush ons.
