Three years ago, I had to pack up my windstones, because we were going to be moving. So they were packed up, in their original bags and boxes, and were kept in my closet. Then we moved, and things got insane… and they continued to sit in my closet in our new house. In just a regular house, not too cold, not too hot, comfortable for us basically.
Tonight, finally, I got my shelf put up. And I unpacked some ‘stones. Black griffin. Female griff. Young dragon, and my Peacock Riser.
I had been exceptionally careful about handling their boxes, so they all got through the experience with no problems. Except… My Riser.
When I packed him, his tag got moved around and underneath his flank. When I unpacked him, the tag was stuck. Despite being careful, it was stuck to the paint, and it flaked the paint off when it came off. Noticeably so, the ‘chips’ are about 1-2 mm long, and there are several spots.
So be careful. When you pack up your windstones, make sure the tags are against the felt bottom – because they stick to the paint!
I’m really bummed out, I take great pride in my mint pieces and am really careful about moving and cleaning them, so this was rather upsetting. 🙁
July 4, 2013 at 12:32 am #899410So sorry about your dragon 🙁
Thank you for the Headsup. Mine have also been in storage for a long time so will have to check them all now. 🙁
I am just going to remove all my tags I think.July 4, 2013 at 12:40 am #899411I’m sorry Kiera 🙁 that really stinks! I think this is good practice when mailing Windstones as well – I believe it’s been mentioned before that tags should be kept under the felt pads even for mailing because they can become stuck to the paint. Ugh 🙁 Do you think you’ll be able to refurbish that spot, or are you just going to leave her as is?

I’ve been putting my tags underneath them when I pack them up since I think the youngs packing paper, mentioned they could get a tattoo from the tag….
4 things I'm looking for:
1. Mother Meerkat
2. production color Sitting Young Oriental dragons to be made in more colors besides VF, Brimstone would be awesome!
3. Female Griffin – Siamese with White
4. September Raffle Prize 2022 AHD Male GriffinJuly 4, 2013 at 4:35 am #899421Oh no 🙁 I’m so sorry to hear that.
July 4, 2013 at 11:40 am #899428Another thing that sticks to the paint: styrofoam peanuts. The new corn ones are fine, but the older, not-recyclable ones, not so much. I’m really glad that a) I don’t have much of the styrofoam stuff and b) I took out the big pieces out of their box right away (’cause Windstones take up less space on a table than in their box).

They’re a food source to little beetles and moth larvae. I NEVER store that stuff in my house anymore, unless it’s in a sealed, super heavy-duty bag. I have found ‘hitch-hikers’ in the packages I open that are packed with these!
July 8, 2013 at 4:45 pm #899563I know what you mean about them staying in storage for a long time. See, right now I don’t have a curio cabinet. I’ve just been displaying certain ones (rotating them around). So, they mainly stay in their box in my closet- in the house. I have a young peacock dragon i bought from a store that didn’t have the original clear bag. So, it was wrapped in tissue paper…..over the years some of it got stuck to the paint. Luckily it didnt damage it, but now I have it wrapped in bubble-wrap. Another one was my rising spectral. It was sent to me in the mail from a store that was closing out. They had the original box, but not the bag. They had it wrapped in the bubble-wrap stuff and some of it warp the paint on the tail from the heat during shipping. Its not noticeable unless your looking at it very close…..
So, I can understand. 🙂

Ok, that freaked me out slightly… so I took everybody out of their boxes!
So right now, it’s a fail as far as display goes, but the “ick” factor is now gone 🙂

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmJuly 18, 2013 at 6:21 pm #900332In a case where the tag is stuck to the paint, instead of pulling it off, I wonder if the tag was soaked in water, if it would come off without damaging the paint as baddy?
July 19, 2013 at 3:27 pm #900378I’ve had newspaper, price tags, and packing paper all stick and I’ve found water and a Qtip to successfully remove it. It’d prob work for a hang tag, too, but your tag would be toast.
July 19, 2013 at 5:00 pm #900385Alas, yes, sadly… nearly anything can stick to a Windstone in storage, most especially if it’s not very cool and low humidity storage. It’s the nature of acrylic polymers in the paints and finishing sprays. The plastic bags should never stick, but other materials can and will. 🙁
There have been a few reports of the plastic bags transferring a wrinkled texture to the surface of Windstones, but it seems that only occurs in higher heat and humidity storage (never recommended conditions!!).
