OMG PAYPAL!! Need some advice on how to fix this if anyone has any ideas. I haven’t looked through their Resolution Center yet.

So I have had 3 paypal accounts over the years. I logged into an old one (“yahoo” for the sake of the story) and I get an error message saying that my account is limited BECAUSE of something that happened September 10, 2012. The account has a zero balance.

I logged into my second account I had with an old school email address “.edu”. I got the same error message. The edu account ALSO has a zero balance.

My third paypal account “gmail” DOES have a negative balance because someone bought a Windstone from me, never opened the box, kept it at her house 2-3 days, and returned it. In the long transit from here to there and back (and maybe getting dropped at her house??) it got broken. In the mean time, Payapal gives her money back and Im out $150 and a broken Windstone. FedEx is in the process of looking at the claim. (that’s ANOTHER story)

So I call PayPal and ask to have the limitation lifted so I can close my other two old accounts (“edu” and “yahoo”) the guy is confused as to why there was/is still a limitation until he sees my negative balance. Even then he’s not like “oHhhh thats why” he is more of…”well…um…you DO have a negative in the one account…*shrug*

Well I tell him that my other two accounts have a zero balance and the issue on September 10 has been resolved, THEREFORE my limit should be lifted.

He says ‘well your account is negative’
But THAT negative account, my “gmail” account isn’t limited. It happened recently and Paypal gives you time to fix your problem before they start limiting your account and such.

We go around in a circle for a few minutes, me saying “the reason for my accounts being limited is resolved and no longer an issue, I need to have the restriction removed. If Paypal wants to issue another restriction, that’s at their discretion. Otherwise the information on their website is incorrect”

him saying “but it doesn’t matter your account is negative” BUT ITS NOT RESTRICTED OR LIMITED SO WHY SHOULD MY OTHER TWO BE!?!? The reason for their restriction has been cleared up!!! BAH!!! I asked to speak with his supervisor and was on hold forever so I hung up. I’ll have to call them back after work or something.

thoughts? Advice? Am I in the wrong here?

God, Wolfen, what a bunch of BS 😛 I feel for you, girl.

My best advice would be don’t give up, and don’t take “No” for an answer. If you badger them long enough they’ll give in.

I don’t know why the people doing customer service can’t listen to reason. I guess that would be too easy…

So, to make sure I’m reading this right –

You have a negative balance on one account and as a result PayPal won’t open any of them?

Unfortunately, since they are all accounts with the same company, I suspect they are within their rights to suspend all accounts based on a negative balance on one account.

If you bring the account to current (if you haven’t already), it would probably help resolve the problem.

Seems like the restricting of the other two accounts is a measure to make sure that you only use the negative balance account to process transactions/receive money. I’m sure Paypal’s goal is to get paid back, and they probably don’t want you pocketing money from the other two accounts until that happens. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable policy. Individuals could really abuse accounts or engage in shady transactions if they know they can just circumvent responsibility and make new accounts. I’m not saying that’s what you are trying to do, but I can understand why Paypal would have a policy in place like this to protect itself.

As stated above, I think the way to resolve this is to get your balance out of the negative, and the other accounts will probably be opened up again.

I don’t really have much by way of advice, but I can say that when I had an issue with my account once – actually involving restrictions that I thought should be lifted – the customer service that I got from PayPal was HORRID. Just like you said – they talk in circles, and they tended to be really condescending about it. When I asked to speak with the guy’s manager, even the MANAGER was condescending and rude, and basically told me he wasn’t going to do anything for me, despite me having a legitimate complaint. I was so incensed that I closed my PayPal account for a few months, and looked EVERYWHERE for any other payment company that would allow me to do business. I swear, there is nothing out there that is as easy and well known as PayPal, and that’s a serious shame. I’m certain this is why they have such awful customer service – they just don’t care, because they know you can’t go anywhere else.

I’m sorry you have to deal with this awfulness Wolfen 🙁

Oh I’d be understanding if they were saying that the reason my other two accounts were limited was BECAUSE of the negative, but the website and customer service is saying that they are limited because of something that happened last September. That something that happened last September has been taken care of.
They aren’t saying that the negative is what’s holding me back….but they are refusing to lift the limitations because they happened to see the negative. They need to lift my limitations or change their reason!

Hannah-you are right! It’s a shame no one else has tried to stop the monopoly that paypal has on the online payment niche. They are a big iron fist eager to take your money (when you try to send it to someone, theres a fee) and have you play by their own rules or else you go home. Ebay is becomming that way.

*opens new can of worms* did you realize that now they require your buy it now price to be THIRTY PERCENT….30%…higher than your starting auction price?? For the longest time it was 10%…start the bidding at $100, or BIN for $110. Reasonable. Now if you want to sell a $100 item and pocket $100, you add 15%-20% for ebay and paypal fees so you can pocket what you want. So to pocket $100, you have to ask $110 or $120, with a BIN of $156…if your item is only worth $100, and you have to ask 50% more to break even?? ridiculous. To pocket $200 on my peacock old warrior, I have to put a BIN of $260!

I wondered if that was a new thing or not! I tried to put up a Poad for a BIN the other day and I would have had to have the starting bid FAR lower than I could afford to sell it for in order to make the BIN a reasonable price. It was really obnoxious.

I think there have been other attempts to make a model like PayPal – the problem now is that PayPal is SO integrated and so “trusted” by everyone, that no one is willing to sign up for an entirely new business. It’s seriously a shame.

not to mention that ebay bought paypal, and they won’t let you use any other form of payment.
