The protoceratops was broken by brute force with a very small rodlike thing almost like a screwdriver. I found a small hole through the wrapping, box and aparently through the peanuts and bubblewrap. I dont know of anything this small that the USPS uses in their facilities.

I have a question. I got insurance from the post office. The seller asked me if I started a claim with them, but if I do they take and destroy the item. Can I still make a claim through eBay even though I got insurance through the post office? The only reason I got insurance through the post office was incase I received it completely mutlated and I didnt care if they destroyed it.

The last two Windstones I filed claims for through the Post Office they just asked for pictures and descriptions of the damage as well as the cost of the item and such. Then they sent me a check for the purchase price and I kept the items. They apparently don’t do the whole bring the item into the P.O. thing and they have you file the claim online.

This is why we inspect the box and if there appears to be any damage, the camera is immediately brought out and photos are taken of the box even before we start cutting the tape. Better to take the time to take photos and then delete them, than wish you had taken photos of the process later…

I would work both through ebay and the post office. The post office can take forever. The seller should actually work through the post office unless the seller wants to send you the receipts. Although eBay will most likely want you to send it back if the seller won’t offer you a refund/discount. That is the only problem with ebay buyer protection. It isn’t really set up for situations where we want to keep the item at a discount and get it repaired. It tends to be all or nothing unless the seller is willing to work with you.

And as far as the shippers goes, UPS is the one that wanted to take the item. They came twice to try and pick it up to “send it back”. We fought and they finally authorized a partial payment to the seller which was shared with us.

I hope you get some money back and can get it fixed.

I had a windstone broken in the mail as well and it was also bought through ebay and insured for mailing. I notified the seller, sent them several really good photos of the mailing box and item showing the damages to the box and describing the damage to the item. The seller filed the insurance claim online with the post office. I did have to keep the box, item, and packaging contents until the claim was completed in case my local office needed me to bring the real items in to prove the claim & photos, but within a week the post office paid the seller, I got all my money back including shipping and I got to keep the item so I could fix it with no hassles and without needing to involve ebay. I was never asked to turn anything over to the post office…it all went really smoothly. Hope it goes that smoothly for you too!
