I thought ya’ll would appreciate these, as they differ a bit.

Last summer, I got this guy from a gallery in Tobermory. It’s one of Betty Nelson-Daniel’s Mocking Birds – they had 4 or 5 of them, and choosing one was difficult! Made with all sorts of different materials.

And in Mexico, I got this Mayan sculpture, made out of onyx, obsidian and mother of pearl (I think). It’s hand-carved, and just a bit taller than the PYO phoenix. The profile is what got me; very representative, I find, of the Mayan people rendering.

They are both very interesting, but I am especially fond of the mocking bird. With the arm and leg stretching out, it’s just very dynamic looking.

they’re both lovely but the Mockingbird really grabs my attention. I keep coming back for more looks at it. And I do love the nobility that is exuded by the Mayan piece. Makes me wonder if it is an interpretation of an actual person or if it just sprang from the artists imagination?

It’s actually a recurring way to represent people – both men and women. You’ll see this profile in a lot of Mayan drawings and scultpures. These particular ones – the ones that we saw in that store, anyway – are amongst the most expressive I’ve seen (though I’m totally not an expert).
