Yes, I am a poet and didn’t know it. But seriously, I had someone ask me what I’d charge for one of these :
I never *sold* many of my PYOs – both of the Red Panda Kirins were trades – and the ones I did sell were at least 2 years ago, I think. I have a hard time parting with the ones I paint for my own amusement, what can I say. >>; That, and I find the thought of putting anything on ebay intimidating lately, what with all their new rules.
Soooo, what would YOU charge for a ‘Red Panda’ kirin? I don’t want to bring down the ‘going rate’ by asking too little, but I don’t want to ask too much, either…so I’m open to suggestions. o.o

That sounds like an excellent suggestion, to see what other artists are asking when they do commission pieces.

Definitely research a good price for these, keeping in mind they’re not OOAK, but they are very beautiful! 🙂 I’d hate to see you undercut yourself because you’re worried of overpricing this! – I wish I could give you more info, but I’m far too new for it all, lol
‘n I don’t know if these are finished or not, but I think you should put gold hooves on these! I think that would turn out very pretty… just my opinion 🙂
I’m glad you guys like them. n_n The top one (version 2 – I added green interference to match the wings) was for Kyrin, the bottom (version 1) was for ruffian, as I recall. I also repainted a mother kirin in this color scheme, but obviously can’t show her off here. =9
I wasn’t sure how up-to-date the Commission Pricing thread was, but now it occurs to me that it has to be, since we fairly recently switched to the new forum. XD That was very helpful, thanks.
Ah, and I don’t advertise as ‘taking commissions’, I just (usually) don’t refuse when asked. =)

The design is clean and well blended and if it’s accomplished through brushwork, that’s more work than just airbrushing a smooth coat color. Are lots of coats of paint used to accomplish the design vs. just a couple? It comes down to quality, cost of materials, and time/effort to complete. I charge less for simple designs and more for something that is either more complex or takes many layers to build up. More time/effort = higher labor cost. You could look around the commission threads in the Flea Market and see what people charge for similar work as well if that helps.

Kitsune those kirins are lovely! I like the second in particular. I agree with drag0nfeathers in terms of price range.
Another way to price them out might be to make sure you’re paid for what you put into them, in terms of materials and time. So think up an hourly rate for your services as an artist, then multiply that by the hours you put into a piece, and add materials.

I agree I also think that if one of those got onto ebay the chances that the price goes higher then the commission value are really strong!
I charge a flat $10 an hour and I log my hours. Materials are included in the cost of my hourly rate (but not shipping!). This tends to work out for me to be the fairest, because naturally the lower intensity schemes will end up taking less time (and costing less) and the more detailed schemes will end up taking more time (and costing more)!
By the way, those Red Pandas are GORGEOUS! I’ve seen your Red Panda Kirins before but I’m stunned every time I see them 🙂

And it's not all brushwork, just the head and the scales on the tail. I'm not that awesome with an airbrush. =( Baww. Kinda sad, because I DO have an airbrush that could do detail like that…if I wasn't so BAD at controlling it! But I like the transparent look building up the layers with a brush gives, anyhow. n_n

Agreed! That is one gorgeous kirin! 🙂 I’d even lean to the higher end of that price range.
This have been really unpredictable lately. I usualy charge by how easy something was for me and how much in demand things are.
Sadly it’s not been a whole lot of demand. I’ve got a few pyo’s that have been shelved for months.
So I’d advise what every price you feel comfortable with. There is nothing wrong with wanting a value even with what every one else is charging…but it’s also completely ok if you want to charge less for what ever reason.
Honestly he is really amazing. Not only is the painting clean and finely blended. But you used colors that are not commom for this color scheme, with the darker blending that almost looks like it has a bluish hue. It’s highly appealing and that is really hard for a good painter to blend and make look as good as you have. He’s worth every penny that other have suggested for sure.
