I have a very large curio that holds most of my Windstones…what I am worried about is that eventually the glass will break under the weight. I am very careful with where I place what peice as far as weight distrubution, but I want to replace the shelves in a couple weeks.
What glass should I get the shelves made out of?
January 24, 2012 at 6:05 pm #870547Personally, I think that the glass is less of an issue than the supports holding it up.
January 24, 2012 at 6:12 pm #870549only held by a centimeter of wood on either side of the longest parts of the rectangle.
January 24, 2012 at 6:31 pm #870551You could put in better supports and get thicker tempered glass shelf. I am worried about this also and am pondering the larger supports (L shaped brackets) to give a better support further into the glass shelf itself. I can get colored L brackets so it won’t look to bad!
January 24, 2012 at 6:57 pm #870553Definitely tempered glass, but as to size: I know we have a very good glass shop here that is happy to make recommendations on stuff like this. If it were me, I’d weigh out the dragons on each shelf, then take those numbers & a pic of the shelf supports in to the shop. Ask for their advice; I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to help you get what you need.
January 24, 2012 at 8:07 pm #870566If your cabinet is commercially available, why not look up the weight limitations for it? I just upgraded one of my display cabinets because I realized the weight limit per shelf was just 13lbs, and my new cabinet (from IKEA) has a weight limit of 55lbs per shelf which is more than sufficient for my needs. Plus the new cabinet is much sturdier and the sculptures inside no longer rattle around when the dogs go tearing around the corner!
January 24, 2012 at 8:22 pm #870570Thats a good idea Jolie! 🙂 My cabinet is definitely not commercially made, but I might check IKEA for the next one I get because goodness knows i need more room for my babies!!!!
January 24, 2012 at 8:29 pm #870571The one I just got is the Klingsbro cabinet from IKEA – http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60128562/
It’s a little weird to put together, but it has an optional lock and is *very* sturdy. I’ve got four dogs who randomly tear around my house, including around the hall and into my office, and this cabinet hasn’t so much as twitched with their thundering little feet. The shelves are spaced so you can fit a Spectral Dragon or a Male Dragon, but not anything taller – a Rising Spectral is probably too tall. Of course you could always leave one shelf out to give you more room if needed. 🙂
January 24, 2012 at 11:00 pm #870614Have you thought about looking at plexiglass? I think if I ever had a glass shelving for these guys (Future dreams, lol) That I’d replace the shelving with plexi.. something pretty thick, but if its done right it should look good 🙂 – Just a thought.

In my experience, Plexiglass bends over time, even with nothing on it!

Even the thicker stuff? I’ve never had any without a good support under it… so I hadn’t even thought of that as an issue..
I think if I get enough Windstones for their own cabinet, I’m going to get my dad to build one… and whatever I use for shelves is going to have massive support system XD
January 25, 2012 at 10:32 am #870705I would not recommend a glass shelf for anything valuable at all! I have a Cabinet with sturdy glass shelves that I use only for displaying little plastic figures with nearly no weight at all.
A few months ago I came home to find one of the shelves broken into a heap of small pieces and I still don´t know what caused this since I have no cats, no kids, it had no damage before, it had enough space on all sides! It looks like it simply burst. The other 3 shleves are still completely intact.
Since then I am a firm supporter of wood shelves especially for something valuable like windstones! 🙂January 25, 2012 at 10:39 am #870706That’s kind of frightening, to think it could just shatter like that with no warning O_O

I like this one!
This is the glass cabinet I have: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10011055/
The spacing is tall enough for an emperor. I have one on a glass shelf (with only a young beside it) and one on the top and bottom wooden shelves. I will definitely look into the Klingsbro next time I need another shelf, though.Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I host the feedback lists, which are maintained by drag0nfeathers.

I had a glass dragon broken by vibration caused by the dogs running down the hall on the other side of the wall!
