Will we ever see this pattern on a few artists edition Windstone unicorns? π
April 21, 2011 at 4:34 am #843021Uh, I have tried. The results were pretty awful. Stark black and white don’t airbrush real well, and hand painting looks so… painted.
But I will probably keep trying.April 21, 2011 at 2:17 pm #843032If Melody wants to send me a Unicorn I can try this. I have an idea of how to make it look less ‘painted’. But only if you guys really want a few of these!
The long mane and poofy tail might look a little strange, but if you can overlook it….

My art: featherdust.comApril 21, 2011 at 3:57 pm #843042I’ve seen a couple PYO unicorns done with zebra stripes that look pretty awesome π
I’d love to see Jennifer paint a unicorn with zebra stripes! (but I couldn’t afford it)
April 21, 2011 at 10:52 pm #843095Oh PLEASE PLEASE Jennifer. I would love to see you paint a zebra unicorn! I would bid and mean it too, without a doubt.
April 22, 2011 at 12:26 am #843106When I did my zebracorn, I used different shades of grey to have a more natural look. I didn’t antique, which would probably have given it a more shaded look, but it could be done. Them stripes that a reeeeeaaaally long time, though.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

My art: featherdust.comMay 5, 2011 at 5:42 pm #844499I don’t know about anyone else, but I would LOVE to see you do zebra unicorns. I especially like the zebra markings that have both black and light brown stripes mixed together. I would bid on them no matter what!
May 5, 2011 at 6:33 pm #844502Dang , I forgot to give them a base coat of paint.

Do you guys have horns for these? I didn’t get any and wanted to make sure that they have them (somewhere). I wonder… aluminum leaf. Hmmm.

My art: featherdust.comMay 6, 2011 at 1:39 am #844557Not trying to sign her up for anything, but just a personal recommendation-Koishii Kitty does some fantastic paint jobs! Windstone should ask her to paint some pieces for them π She’s doing a gorgeous Okapi PYO unicorn for me. She does a great job with stripes. Here is a progress shot of my Uni done by Koishii
May 6, 2011 at 2:50 am #844564Whatever you do though, make sure you don’t antique it with gray. It makes black stripes on white look awful. I ruined a white tiger griffin this way. Dark brown might work though.
May 6, 2011 at 3:53 am #844568Jennifer, I too would like to see you do Male Unicorns in Zebra, Tiger, etc. I don’t recall you doing any unicorns before, (??) but I love your Griffins and your Labradorite themes. You have remarked on the bad economy and how time consuming your pieces are, but you are overdue for a special piece. Most anything you do will fetch a good price, even now, and I would love to see more Labradorites in any sculpt. Maybe even a Labradorite Unicorn?

I’ll second that; Windstone needs more artists to do special pieces, and very artist has a different take on a piece. Koishii does a fantastic job on stripes, not just on Okapi stripes. They look so completely natural. She did a unicorn for me recently that is exquisite; he was a fantasy version of a white tiger and has not only wonderful striping, but also beautifully delicate coloring.

I haven’t done any unicorns yet! π I only have one male unicorn here.
I don’t think that everything I’d do would fetch a good price; or at least, such was not the case with the two PYO phoenixes that I did most recently. Though the economy for things does seem to be getting better recently! π Which is great news.
I should just come right out in the open and say it! I may regret this but I am an open person even though it bites me in the butt sometimes. I am an artist and I love painting. I love painting my ideas and the things that I adore. Birds, fantasy, and so on. I love Windstones, too! They are gorgeous and honestly the best collectible fantasy statues out there. Melody is an INCREDIBLE ARTIST! I still get so excited when I look at the Windstones I own. They have touched my heart since I was a little girl, staring peacock Windstones and a kirin family in a glass display case in the 80s. And painting them is an artistic output, no doubt… but in the end I am painting something on someone else’s creation– Melody’s gorgeous sculptures– and while the paint job can make a piece, I suppose, in the end it is still painting on someone else’s work. While enjoyable sometimes, it is not an ongoing creative outlet for me. So when pieces don’t sell well– and this is the selfish part, I admit it!! — there isn’t a huge incentive to spend huge amounts of time painting things that are someone else’s work, when I could be painting my own work.
Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy painting Windstones. But it’s complicated, especially if there is a fear that they won’t sell well. I think that time is starting to pass? I don’t know! But the only way to find out is to see! So I will paint some unicorns and try to get this Labradorite Old Warrior finished (probably not this month though for him…). Let’s see how this goes. π

My art: featherdust.comMay 6, 2011 at 10:26 pm #844656There was a unicorn with stripes on it, I saw it in the windstone facebook page “ebay things from the past”- the caption says he was painted like a Quagga, by Helen Ross Miskin? I like the stripes on that one, with the brown and white. A black and white striped one could be nice too, but I think the mixture, like with the okapis or the quagga one, are better. But I’d love to see either one π
