Hi. I just opened up my black emerald peacock lap dragon for the first time today (It’s been in it’s box since I purchased it when it came out – a few years ago?, waiting for it’s chance for shelf space). Anywayz, when I opened it, I noticed some white and greenish stuff on the horn – looked like mold? Anyone have any idea what happened or how to prevent this?

I remember someone else talking about this once before. Let me see if I can find the thread for ya………..

EDIT: UGH! I can’t find it! I know you’re not alone, hopefully that person will see this thread and can give you some insight.

Here’s a thread where someone else had a similar problem with the egg on a coiled mother dragon. Does it look like that? :~

Thanks for the link Adaneth, very interesting. But now I’m going to be very paranoid when checking over my dragons for dusting duty =/

          Horn rot.
It is a long story, that I won’t go into here.

The best way to deal with this is to wash the area, dry it well and apply a coat of clear lacquer(clear nail polish) to the spot. If it isn’t too badly discolored, the spot will almost disappear, and it shouldn’t recur.
We would love to send you a new horn to replace it, but unfortunately it is nearly impossible to remove the old horns without damaging the dragon.

I had very good luck with baking soda and water–here’s the post:

I had a Kinsella Castle at the same time that had the “horn rot” for sure, although in this case it was spire rot. The photo seems to have gone missing, but I remember that it improved the rot. It was considerably more difficult to clean than the tarnished horns on the Oriental though….

There’s some of that on the horns of (I think) two of my Laps! Not sure what it is, but I suspect it’s to do with the pewter — it looks like the verdgris you see on copper or bronze, so I guess it’s some part of the pewter alloy reacting to air or moisture (or something in the gold?)…

Fortunately mine don’t have a whole lot of it on their horns, but I remember that at least one person had a ‘severely affected’ dragon when the topic first came up. Aside from poking it with my fingernails, I haven’t done much to try to remove it; it seemed pretty well fused, which is part of why I assume it’s a reaction in the metal itself and not, say, an overspray of primer or something organic like mold.

Maybe post a quick query in the “Ask Melody” section and see if she’s encountered it, or recalls where the first post was?

My roommate said it has to do with moisture being trapped in the pewter reacting to the gold plating. The moisture is between the pewter and gold and the chemical reaction actually eats away at the gold from the pewter side.
