Hi guys! Please forgive my wall of text here, I wanted to make a couple of things clear before asking my original question! XD
I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I’m a little nervous about posting my intentions on the forum because I know that Windstone frowns on this sort of thing, but I decided that being open about it seemed like a better idea because I think my intentions are well meaning!
I am in the process of repairing a few different sculpts, a couple of which I am planning on repainting. I have successfully removed the eyes from a couple of pieces (one of them I damaged further in the process – curses! Oh well.. it’ll give me practice XD), and I am planning on replacing the production eyes with new eyes to go with the color schemes I am planning on doing.
I’d like to mention here that I do NOT have any intent to sell these pieces!! This isn’t to say that I will never give them away, just that I am perfectly happy with the idea of painting these for myself. I realize that there are a lot of different (valid) reasons why Windstone would prefer people not to repaint production pieces, but I feel as though I also have some pretty valid reasons to repaint the ones I am going to (which I won’t get into in this post, but if anyone wonders I’d be more than happy to explain!). Also, the repaints will be VERY clearly marked – both on the felt pad (that I will likely replace so it isn’t the original Windstone pad) and in any images that I post of the repaint.
Anyway, I felt like I should preface my question with that information in case anyone wanted to know what my intentions were – they’re all on the table now 🙂
ORIGINAL QUESTION (aka tl;dr):
What I am wondering is if anyone has any information on the eye sizes of production pieces. I’m looking mostly for information regarding Male Dragons and Fledglings, but it would be nice to have that info for any other pieces that people may know about. I realize that I could probably just measure the eyes once they’re out of the sculpt, but I wanted to see if anyone (with likely better measuring skills than me) already knew this information.
Also if anyone knows the size of the gems used in Males/Fledglings/anything else the info would be greatly appreciated 🙂
Thanks!

After the piece is repainted and everything, it would be mostly indistinguishable from a good quality knock off, except for the pad.
April 6, 2011 at 4:44 pm #841841From expeience fixing a few males, I’m pretty sure the male dragons have the same size eyes as PYO Keepers. I’m NOT positive, but I thought they did. I don’t know about the fledglings though.
On any piece I have repainted, I usually leave the felt pad on, but I write with permanent marker ALL OVER IT “UNOFFICIAL REPAINT”

As far as the eyes, I was kind of hoping that the males would have the same size eyes, I held up one of my PYO eyes and thought they looked pretty close but I know “pretty close” can still mean an eye sticking in a way you don’t want it to!
Thanks very much for the help guys 🙂

April 8, 2011 at 5:49 pm #842026I’d really like to see gems/eyes for sale, mostly because every time I do a PYO piece, my color scheme seems to evolve into something different and the eyes no long suit it.
And although repairing production pieces are way out of my skill range, it would be nice to have extra eyes for those who can do it.April 8, 2011 at 9:37 pm #842046I have some pieces with eye colors I absolutely hate and want to replace. So whenever I see something relating to eye sizes, I add it to my list. I found conflicting info on the Wolf and Fledgling, but this is what I have accumulated so far:
PYO Griffins, Kirins, and the Small Dragons take 8mm
PYO Keeper takes 11mm
Unicorns and phoenix are 6mm
Wolf is 4mm
Muse is 7 and 8 mm
Lap takes 11
Male Griffin takes 11Fledgling probably takes 10 ????
April 8, 2011 at 10:02 pm #842047Awesome, thanks Syn! I’ll be able to confirm the eye size of Males here in a day or so, once I’m able to get the eyes out of this dragon. I have the feeling that drag0n is right about the eye size (I’m crossing my fingers because I have a TON of 11mm eyes!!)
As far as the fledgling, 10mm sounds right – I have my fledgling’s eyes out and they are smaller than the 11mm but not by much, and I definitely can’t eye one millimeter >< the thing with the fledlging eyes though is that the Windstone eyes for them have a large pupil, which adds to the "cute look" greatly!! If I were to special order fledling eyes I would definitely make it a point to get eyes with larger pupils.
Illith – there are several different places that you can get different eyes. My favorite for glass eyes is Tohickon's, but for more fantasy eyes Dreaming Tree Studios has some amazing resin eyes! Here are the links:
Tohickon’s Glass Eyes (There are 2 different Flat Back bird eye categories – both have beautiful selections!)
Dreaming Tree Studio
Van Dyke’sI do agree though, I wish I could buy eyes directly from Windstone because they offer some beauties that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else – most notably the metallic eye colors. I’m not sure if they ever have plans to make these eyes available to purchase though.

Maybe for PYOs but I cannot imagine them doing it for other pieces (though I do know there is some overlap with PYO eyes and production piece eyes).
Switching eyes (and gems) on production pieces is hugely discouraged, and if you do so in a permanent manner (anyone) the felt pad needs to be marked, as this could be a huge problem for confusion on if the piece is rare or if it’s just got switched eyes.Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! I forgot to specify that – I did mean specifically for PYO eyes, I wouldn’t imagine in a million years that Windstone would start selling eyes for any of their production sculpts, and for good reason!

I have a lot of trouble navigating their website, which may be part of the reason why I prefer Tohickon’s over Van Dyke’s, but from what I can see, if you go to the link I provided and then click the standard pupil size, then No Wire, it should bring you to a listing of colors. You have to click on each color to see them (again, I think they could improve their website a LOT with some well-placed pictures, but the eyes are quality!)
Also, I can confirm that Male dragon eyes are 11mm.

I knew to get the flat-backed bird eyes from Tohickon and assumed Van Dyke’s would be the same. But once I got to Van Dyke’s site, I was completely lost. I have no idea what “TISP” means, and they have no less than 13 categories under “birds.”

The eyes we use for PYO and production items are the same. We are slowly trying to make all our production eyes metallic. Some of our medium blue and light orange eyes are now metallic.
Be careful buying eyes from other sources, some may have unprotected acrylic paint on the back where glue could touch. The reason we dont paint our eyes with acrylic is because the glue eventually pulls the paint off. Most places don’t say how exactly the eyes are painted so you would have to email and ask. Taxidermy eyes are not meant to be permanently glued in place. On a taxidermy animal, the eyes are set in by putting clay around the eye (like an eyelid) not by putting glue all over the painted side.
