My wife recently Got a PYO dragon but its just a small plastic toy, She did a great job on it so I started searching.. and Here i am. I was just wonder if anyone had any idea what paint/Brushes i should buy her. I’m going to order the kirin seeing the dragons are out of stock 🙁 I did a fair bit of searching the forums to find related topics but i had no luck. Thank you
November 20, 2010 at 4:07 pm #831905Hi demind! Welcome!! I’m not as good as other folks here (Koishii, greyfireartz, machineguts, Kujacker, dragonfeathers, Yeral, just to name a few) Most folks here use Golden brand acrylic paint (which can be pricey) others of us use regular old craft paint and still accomplish beautiful work! For paintbrushes I use a natural hair wash for all over coverage, a shader, a liner and a fine for detail work. Hope this helps!

I use some of the cheaper paint brushes that you can get from the artist grade acrylic section in Micheals. They work and can last but are cheaper because I go through brushes fairly fast because of painting regularely. you can find smaller kits for a lot less, but this is one of the brushes I like using http://www.dickblick.com/products/stanislaus-golden-taklon-brush-sets/
These brushes are good for dry brush affect and texture http://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-economy-white-bristle-brushes/#photos
There is more to painting, paints and brushes…dry brush affect, wash affect, detailing brushes, some of it is just testing things as you paint.

November 20, 2010 at 8:32 pm #831908I think some people here may think I’m crazy after hearing this, but I only use 2 different paintbrushes for all of my PYOs – a #6 Filburt and a #0 Round – both are American Painter brand and I believe they’ve got synthetic bristles but I’m not positive on that. I sit in Michaels for about 20 minutes just feeling the texture of paintbrushes before I buy them 😆
Using these brushes I can gain access to a lot of detail, not sure if that’s what your wife is after or not – it can definitely get pretty tedious! I also use Liquitex Soft Body paints and Golden interference paints to give it that shiny luster.
You may also think about grabbing your wife a bottle of Retarder (Golden sells it for about 8 bucks) – when added to paints it lengthens the drying time so the paints in your palette don’t dry so fast and also the paint on the figurine take longer – in case she’s looking to keep it workable for a while.
Good luck to her, and you should definitely get her on the forums once she’s gotten her Kirin – we’d love to see her work!
