Bear with me here, I’m not a very good writer, and I tend to ramble.
My Didley is old. She’s blind, deaf and has a bad ear-yeast problem. She sleeps all day, and eats, that’s her life. She urinates while she sleeps and when she gets up, her hind end doesn’t want to help her. She refuses to take the short steps to get off the porch, she wants to take the long/high steps and again her hind end doesn’t want to help her so I have to be there so she doesn’t fall on her head. She doesn’t seem to be in pain, but she’s heevy ( I know that’s spelled wrong but the other way comes out heavy. yes, she’s that too. 😉 ) When do you decide it’s time and realise she has no life? She’s affectionate and wants some attention but not much. When do you say it’s time? I’m afraid I’ll find her dead at the bottom of the stepss one morning. thoughts?September 28, 2010 at 3:22 am #827935Aww 🙁 My hubby’s dog was getting up in age and wasn’t getting around too well either. One day he just gave him a soulful, tired look that said, “I’m ready”. I think that was the hardest thing my hubby has ever had to decide, but he said it was what was best for his old friend.
September 28, 2010 at 3:24 am #827936Awe sweetie, I’m sorry that your puppy is going through this. Old age sucks.
Pixie went through all that when she was put down last year – I think they let you know, a bit. But I can’t tell you that it’s time to put down your dog, unfortunately, the hard decision is up to you.
But whenever you/she decide it’s time – I’m sure all of us here at the forum will support you/comfort you.
September 28, 2010 at 2:06 pm #827937Well, if you want to quantify it, give yourself something tangible, start marking good days vs. bad days on the calendar. When the bad start outnumbering the good, then you have a decision to make shortly.
I put my gal down at the end of this past July. The decision itself wasn’t hard, because she was so very sick, not herself, not eating and the last day she spent most of it throwing up. The hardest part was getting used to her not being there. Out of two weeks, she had two good days where she wanted to chase her ball and wallow in the floor.
If you haven’t already, give yourself a quiet moment both with and without her and think it over. You will know when it is time to let go if you listen to yourself.
September 28, 2010 at 3:19 pm #827938What Rusti has advised is a good idea, Laurie – I’m so sorry 😥 What it really comes down to is when are you ready to let her go… That’s the hardest part for me; saying goodbye. Big {{{HUGS}}} for you, dearest.

September 28, 2010 at 5:14 pm #827939I’m so sorry hun. I don’t have any advice to offer but I have cyber hugs for both of you.
September 28, 2010 at 6:34 pm #827940She sounds like she’s miserable. For Canelle, that was the decision-making thing; she was old, weak, couldn’t eat… she truly wasn’t herself.
Your baby sounds like she’s getting there. In the end, you have to decide what’s best for her, not you, and that’s when it’s really, really tough because we want to keep our babies forever!
Big hugs!

September 30, 2010 at 5:57 pm #827942It so hard to make that decision…I dread the day I have to with Maks.
I don’t think anyone of us can tell you if its the right time or not, but I do have to agree that when the time comes I think you will know, she will tell you in her own way. I’ve always believed that when a dog still eats and shows you affection they are not ready to go but I may be wrong, I dunno, thats just how I have always felt.

October 6, 2010 at 6:36 pm #827943🙁 Oh hun, I’m so sorry. Sounds like her quality of life is really deteriorating fast. I’m with Rusty, she gave some good advice. I know in the end it won’t be easy. 😥
