I just shipped a male kirin US to Canada for the $29 and change the USPS quoted me, and the buyer says she just got hit with a $30 charge before she can pick it up. Is this how customs work? I don’t know what else to tell her; and $60 for shipping Florida to Ontario would be just nuts. 😕
September 24, 2010 at 9:55 pm #501645September 24, 2010 at 10:22 pm #827636Though I do know that Ontario has a Harmonized sales tax and that it does get charged on the post (If I send something to Ontario, I get charged HST, even though I’m in Alberta that has not sales tax 😡 ). Also It is usually on items valued over $100.00 that get charged for customs fees for me and then it’s approximately 10% of the value for customs fees. I would recommend that the person you sent it to talk to her post office about what the fees are for, as it sounds a bit much for me. 😕
Dragonmedly, Mmloda, Jasmine etc might be able to shed some light on this since they are all in OntarioSeptember 24, 2010 at 10:27 pm #827637Yeah, that’s not 10%… I insured it for the over $100 she paid for it, but she didn’t pay- nor was it insured- for over $200. I sure didn’t value it at $300!
September 24, 2010 at 11:20 pm #827638In Ontario, if you’re charged by the post office, you normally pay tax on the value declared by the shipper. It should be 13-14%, something like that. How much did you put for the value?

(still though, 13-14%? That’s one devil of a tax. 😮 )September 24, 2010 at 11:30 pm #827640When I’ve been hit with customs from items shipped usps it’s always been $5 plus tax on the item value stated on the customs form. So for someone in Ontario customs should be $5 plus 13% tax ($25?). It would be even worse if you sent it through another carrier like ups. They would have charged you $30+ for service fees alone.

(still though, 13-14%? That’s one devil of a tax. 😮 )Goods & Services tax = 7% (? or is it 6 now?)
Provincial sales tax = 7%
= Harmonized sales tax. We now pay it on everything in Ontario. The Maritimes have had it for a while, I think. So the 30 bucks for 160$ seems about right if you add the 5$ Flamingdragon mentioned. I’m in Ontario, though, so I don’t recall something like this. 30 does seem a bit high to me, but once again, it depends on which province you’re in.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmSeptember 25, 2010 at 10:03 pm #827642Almost all my Windstone packages get hit with at least 20%…15% HST plus a $5 “handling fee”. And according to the postal service website, any item with a declared value over $20 can be charged.
September 26, 2010 at 1:30 am #827643Doesn’t it help to mark it as a gift and not goods? Just wondering because I’ve always been told to mark as gift.

Sometimes but most of the time I still get charged even if it’s marked as a gift. I don’t even think that customs cares if it is or not. 🙄
September 26, 2010 at 4:59 am #827645Marking a package with gift only helps if the item is valued at less than $60CAN as that’s the maximum gift exemption(for normal parcel it’s $20).
@dragonmedley the GST is now 5% it was only at 6% for around a year.
September 29, 2010 at 4:29 pm #827646Well I feel just sick today. I just received a pyo valued at 100 dollars and got it shipped UPS and just got charged an additional 43.19 on top of the 20 some dollars I already paid for shipping 😮 😡 I phoned UPS to complain and they said if it had been shipped by air I would have no customs and I would have got it faster. Or if it was valued under 60 dollars I would have no fees. If I had it shipped USPS I would have only paid 5% of the value so only 5 dollars customs. How in the world does UPS justify those charges. 😕 It makes it very difficult for Canadians to purchase from the US. Just imagine if Canada no longer bought US products how many jobs would be lost. This is very unfair. Even to get a package shipped to Canada from Belgium is twice the amount then if it was shipped to the US I dont understand it we are just as far from Belgium as the US 👿
Anyways sorry for the rant but I just had my Windstone spending money really cut into so I had to vent 😥September 29, 2010 at 4:31 pm #827647Oh yes just to add the person I bought this from was nice to mark it as a gift but that did not help. 🙁
UPS sucks!September 29, 2010 at 4:58 pm #827648That’s why I always insist on using the post office for shipping when I buy in the US. UPS charges an arm and a leg in brokerage fees. FedEx does have them, but they are cheaper, but really, USPS is the way to go.
