It happened again. 🙁 “A mile-long oil sheen spread Thursday from an offshore petroleum platform burning in the Gulf of Mexico off Lousiana, west of the site of BP’s massive spill.” Here is the latest news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_gulf_rig_explosion

This is getting to be ridiculous. Why are none of the inspections catching the problem before they happen?? 😡

At least this does not appear to be as bad as the BP one. But still, inspections should catch these things.

If they were doing things properly in maintenance and inspections, accidents like this would NOT happen, and then drilling in the ocean would be fine (we’re kinda running out of oil resources on land, I think that very few – if any – wells are “primary” on land, meaning they pump under their own pressure). But right now they should shut down all of the wells and do thorough inspections and fix EVERYTHING.

‘Tis better to invest in prevention then to invest in clean-up. Unfortunately, a company will hesitate to spend the money on the preventative measures until something happens. Most companies are like this.

Please don’t shoot me, as someone who’s province lives on oil – I hesitate to just say, “shut it down” and leave it at that.

It is endless it seems! *GAH!!* I hate this-how they are all money hungry, how their selfishness leads to this devastation. 🙁

If anyone ever wants a pretty objective look at Big Oil and alternatives (which can be explored without losing jobs!) I’d suggest the film called “Fuel”. It was made before the BP oil leak so it is not a wild reactionary film.

I still don’t see how jobs wouldn’t be lost. Some jobs just would not transfer into a biofeul industry. Like most of the rig people. I don’t see an analogous job coming up for them in green technology.

The best current green tech would actually in theory create more jobs than the (failing) oil business currently employs. Depending on the implementation, they’d be local jobs in every municipality too!

But would it create jobs for people that would work with their oilfield experience and training? Or would they have to get new training for these new jobs – it seems to me like it would create a problem of “there are jobs, but no one with the right training to fill it, so now we have a bunch of empty positions and unemployed people who aren’t qualified”. Some would transfer (the chemists, the engineers, people with diplomas and degrees), but the grunts might not. Especially if they’ve been doing the same job for 20 years.

That might just be me thinking though. I don’t see a rig person transferring to green tech without quite a bit of extra training, esp. since some of them have just their highschool diploma or less.
