I’m selling my gold Emperor dragon…and someone asked if I could ship him to Australia…I dont mind, but so far it seems so expensive it wouldnt be worth it! I dont have him packaged up yet, but I was estimating the size of the outside box to be 22x18x18. Has anyone shipped any large Windstones to elsewhere besides Canada/USA ? I checked the post office with a sample zip code/area and apparantly I have to call to get a quote. UPS quoted $822???!! That cant be right! The Emperor weighs 16lbs according to the Windstone store, so I figured shipping weight would be 17lbs and change…I plugged in 17lbs 4oz just to get a rough idea. I need some advice! I really want to sell my Emperor, but I cant imagine the potential buyer would want to pay more than the dragon’s worth just for shipping. :

That sounds about right. Shipping large boxes internationally is not cheap or even reasonable. The USPS website should give you an estimate, unless they consider the box too big to ship. They have rules about the size, and they won’t even ship it if it goes over their size limit.

Yeah I would be so worried about shipping something like that that fare but then again as long as it’s packed right. USPS is going to be less than UPS but remember you can’t insure first class international mail anymore. So if you want insurance you’ll have to send it priority mail, and they charge a big fee for any boxes larger than 15″ long. With priority mail at that size and weight I would think you’ll be looking at $100 or more.

Huh. When I worked at the video game store, I got a lot of promo items that I would just ebay. I sold a large Mario Galaxy promo stand and the guy who won it was in Chili, I believe. The box was only about half an inch to an inch thick, but around 4 feet tall. Didn’t weigh too much. USPS shipped it for $50. I don’t see why shipping something like an emp’s sized box and weight would cost $822…

$822.00? 😮 really? that seems ridiculous. I shipped a breyer horse there once but i can’t recall what it shipped for. less than 40.00 i thought. Like between 20-30 but i can’t remember it was so long ago

Yeah UPS is crazy on international. You can still send stuff first class international which is cheap, but can’t be insured. International priority mail now starts at $28 no matter what (size, weight, etc) or where it’s going, so the bigger and heaver it is the more it cost 🙁 I do way too much shipping LOL
Sample: box to China was 11″ X 11″ X 14″ (under the 15″ fee) and 8lbs it was $40 so with the 17lbs it’s going to be more.

While I prefer UPS domestic, they’re NUTS for international shipping. I end up USPS with international. The last time I shipped something LARGE international with them was before they got so anal with sizes and crazy with prices; seems to me it was around $50-$75, but it was years (3+?) ago and I don’t remember for sure. It was an old warrior, went to Europe. I sold a motorcycle carburetor to Finland probably a couple years ago, kind of heavy but not large, think it was around $30. Around the same time I sold a box of MLPs to Australia, light but boot box in size, think it was $15. I would go ahead and box it up and take it to the post office when you can to get a quote. I’d get both Priority and 1st Class quotes and let the buyer know, that way it’s up to them what/if, and let them know there’s no insurance on 1st Class so if it got busted, too bad.

Yeah, UPS is hideously expensive to ship internationally, plus they sock the receiver with a good sized fee on top of it all just to get their package (this is in addition to any customs charges, though for the value of a production Emperor, I believe Aussie’s luck out with no custom fees, since it’s under $2K).

USPS Priority is definitely the way to go, since you get to add insurance on it. I usually do Priority Mail International, but I’ve done Express Mail International as well (which is a bit more expensive, but gets there a little faster). You should definitely be able to ship it with Priority Mail International at least. It’s within the size and weight limits. 🙂

Fedex and UPS are very expensive shipping Internationally.. shipping USPS to International locations is expensive as well.. I just send a box to Philippines and it was over $60.. small boxes were in the area of $35 or more depending on how much they weigh..

to Australian for 17 lbs.. USPS would be your only reasonable option.. and it would still be about $100 if not more..

Its strange, everyone who has bought something from me lately is out of the country….2 Windstones to Canada, a big hard plastic pony to Australia, 2 sets of Grand Champion horses to 2 people in Australia…kinda funny.

On UPS’s website, when I put in the 17lbs shipping, it said the shipped weight would be 115lbs? I think that may have something to do with it. I dont know where they got that! Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and advice. Maybe this will be a bigger project than I thought. O.O lol

If it helps, shipping to the UK for an Emperor is coming up on the Windstone store as $73.75 using Priority Mail. Just to give a rough idea of international shipping.

USPS is cheaper for me, rather than Fedex or UPS. May or may not be the same for Australia but I’m guessing it is.

Wolfen, if it wasn’t for our International buyers, sadly the U.S. sellers wouldn’t be making much money – they really do tend to be able to afford things more! I highly suggest everyone open their selling to International because of it; I have sold to just about everywhere: Singapore, U.K., Canada, Colombia, well everywhere pretty much. And always quote about $20. higher than your GUESS at shipping (if you go to USPS without having it actually packed up) and ALWAYS use Priority shipping insured…… sometimes Priority International has a built in automatic insured value but usually I’ve had to buy additional insurance. It’s all costly so not only should you charge for actual shipping, but TIME and MATERIALS should be added in. You can always refund any overpayment, but you are entitled to receive compensation for your time and materials too. I agree with Misato above, if it comes to about $73.75 then quote the buyer $90.00 to cover your bases.

                              Hi everyone,

I am said annoying international buyer… 😳 I’m sorry Wolfen, I didn’t know this would be such a pain in the rear. I was expecting anything up to $200 US for shipping, but not $822! I think USPS (or UPS) is pulling a dodgy here. He is bigger then the other Windstones, but not that much! I thought $150 would be more like it. Still, I do thank you for being willing to ship to the end of the world (effectively, that is what Australia is), as not everyone does and that can make it hard to aquire certain pieces. Also, I am aware that you might like to charge for compensation for the hassle. I was estimating that I would be up for around $500 AU. Hopfully it won’t be more than that. Once again Wolfen, I’m sorry for the hassle.

                                Me again…

Is the $822 for air mail or shipping? I just looked at sending a similar size/weight package from Australia to the US and it came up with shipping between AU$103 and AU$210.
I also checked FedEx sending b/w Aus and US, and that came up with b/w US$440 and US$550.

I dont understand why the costs are so different depending upon the direction of travel. 😡

I don’t mind if it was shipped rather than flown (I understand that there will be a couple of months delay) to keep the price down to something more resonable. 🙂
