I live in the suburbs of Houston (NW) and I went to visit my cousin last night who is, for the summer, staying with a friend “inside the loop” near the Galleria. I got to thinking of all the names for different places around town and what was associated with them and got to wondering about other cities (I havent traveled much-YET- so I dont know)

For example: Houston is a sprawling city with a road that encompasses “down town” (well to ME its down town) and a larger loop circling the suburbs, all intersected with a “cross”-a road going North, south, east, west, and places in between (NE, NW, SE, SW) as Im sure most major cites are. The smaller loop is called 610 or “the loop”. The larger loop is Beltway 8 or “The beltway”. Then there’s I-45 running north, I10 running E & W, HWY59 running SW etc.

If you live INSIDE 610 “the loop” you’re called an “Interlooper” and it means you’re usually snooty and have a lot of money. The truly rich of Houston hang out “inside the loop” or on Westheimer and Post Oak. And people who just wish they were truly rich, but still have a lot of money. “Normal people” live there too (but I dont see how!)

“The Heights” is another place where a small 1 story house can run you $400,000+ because its close to the Galleria mall, and used to be where the rich and famous hung out back in the 70’s and 80’s. There are a lot of older, nice places mixed with some run down places. Its kind of strange to me.

THE place to avoid are the Wards-5th Ward is the worst. You dont want to have white skin and be in the 5th Ward without a gun. Ive driven through the 3rd ward before but you’d never know it. My boyfriend had to point it out. “We’re in the 3rd Ward now. Dont look at anyone.” he was serious. Another bad place is “Acres homes” which for 3 weeks recently, I was driving through to get to work. Its not bad LOOKING, but there are a lot of run down homes nestled in the trees and undergrowth and people “on something” wandering the streets. I made sure to drive super politely there.

NW houston is “upper middle class”/rich, North is kind of sparce-not much until you get to the next town “The Woodlands” which is where the ‘new money’ folks hang out because there’s high class stores like Armani at the mall, and there’s a lake. A gross lake, but its a lake. The view is nice. 🙂
South Houston is more on the poor side but not scary ghetto, East Houston is super ghetto and West Houston is uppity, pretentious “middle/upper middle class” people.

So now tell me about your city 🙂 😈

I used to work at a store on Weslayan st. inside the 610 loop. That was an experience.

I have lived in so many, but I dont remember any nicknames except for when I lived in Vegas. We lived in “North Town”, which was the ghetto, and yeah, you didn’t look at us when you drove by, either. 😀

Right now I live in COB Speicher… and I cannot tell you what we call this place because none of it is appropriate for kids. :nea: 😀

Only nickname for Edmonton that I know is Deadmonton…… we Albertans aren’t very imaginative, it seems. I don’t know any local nicknames within Edmonton though.

But people shudder when you say you live in Beverly. It’s fun. 😀

                  We have tons. We have:
Downtown (There’s one in Minneapolis and one in St. Paul–your usual tall office buildings, etc.)
Uptown (which is south of downtown Minneapolis–trendy, overpriced, fun)
North loop (just north of Minneapolis–expensive Bohemian (not contradictory here))
Northeast (Northeast Minneapolis–an area of both ghetto and trendy, there’s a push to revitalize the ghetto-y parts)
Summit (Area in St. Paul with a lot of OLD money–well, as old as it gets in MN)
Other side of the river (depending on whether you live on the west side of the river (Minneapolis) or the east side (St. Paul) it has different meanings–people tend to stay on “their” side of the river, for the most part)
Inner circle (oldest ‘burbs closest to the downtowns)
                  Many others

Then, there are the individual ‘burbs. Each major one has its own reputation. Too many to list, though.

                    LOL to Dragon87… Deadmonton… 😆 I’ve called it that a time or two…
Here are some nicknames I’ve heard for Alberta cities…
                    Calgary (my hometown) – Cowtown
                    Edmonton – Chucksville
                    Reddeer – Deadrear
If you’re from Saskatchewan your a ‘stubblejumper’

Also, my Mum’s home town is Killam. They have a sign as you come into town that reads “Please Drive safely, we love our children. Killam”
They’re in the Ripleys believe it or not book for that
