THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.‘Step forward now, Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?’The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
‘No, Lord, I guess I ain’t.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can’t always be a saint.I’ve had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I’ve been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny,
That wasn’t mine to keep….
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.I know I don’t deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand. There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.‘Step forward now, you Soldier,
You’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve done your time in Hell.’please pray for our men and women
who have served
and are currently serving our country
and pray for those who have given
the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.GOD BLESS AMERICA

May 29, 2010 at 1:45 am #816229Wow! Did you just come up with that poem yourself?
May 29, 2010 at 2:20 am #816230If I remember correctly it’s one that seems to always crop up on the internet and in emails near Memorial Day/Veteran’s Day/Fourth of July.
May 29, 2010 at 2:27 am #816231:yes:   It was just too good to pass up seeing as how we have ‘family members’ who are serving and helping to keep our freedoms intact 😀 I just write silly stuff like the Poad Ode for ski. Lots are based on me boyohs growing up. For example –
‘Construction sites
and little boys
have two things in common
dirt and noise!’and then there is The Drinking Fountain-
‘Stretch, reach, stand on toes
it shoots water up my nose!
And while I cough and choke and splutter
it does the same thing to my brother!’twindragonsmum 😀

May 31, 2010 at 4:08 pm #816239During this day I just wanted to thank all our men and women who serve our country. Was going to make my own thread but this one is perfect. I’m attaching a picture of my older brother. The picture is old–taken in the early 60s. He was a career Marine and served in Vietnam. He passed away in 1996 of a massive stroke. He earned a Purple Heart while in Vietnam and numerous other medals that we didn’t know about until he passed away. He never bragged about his accomplishments but always did what he had to do. He had the greatest respect among his peers past and present. Here’s my brother, Jim

That little boy who played in sand
Grew into a handsome man
Protected self and his Home Land
One of many with the angels stand
~
Give our thanks to Gods and Men
Once young boys; the girls now Women
Thank the Military from start to end
Protect our homes and our Freedom
~
Lets not forget those left behind
During conflicts or peaceful times
The Mothers, Fathers, Pets and Children
Who pray they come home safe again
