If you can help it, don’t do it, at least, not if you have a father and brother like mine, who are hyper critical of everything you do since you are female.

Long story short, dad has a micro sprint car that brother drives. We have the vinyl printer/cutter and some wrap vinyl, so dad wanted to wrap the wing and asked me to do something for it. Sure.

Asked brother what he wanted. Brother wants tribal along the bottom of the wing. Great.

Sketch a tribal design, send phone pic to brother.

      Receive OK.

Scan in sketch and vectorize everything in Illustrator. Add a number. Few hours worth of work.

Oh wait, that looks terrible, you suck, now we want flames instead.

      *facedesk*

In addition to a shirt dad asked me to do that brother refuses to wear. I’d feel worse if it were just me they do this too, but they asked my mother to embroider some shirts for them some time ago. Well, she did, and they all of a sudden didn’t like those either and won’t wear them. I swear I could make $100k+ a year and rival Milton Glaser or Jonathan Ive and they’d still do this to me cuz I’m a gurl.

I can’t not do anything for dad ever again, because the equipment in the basement was half bought for me – he can’t effectively use them without me. But I don’t think I’ll do anything else for my brother unless he’s got a really good reason why I ought.

      /rant.

Family can be a b*tch! You have to set harsh rules, and it can be tough. Put a price tag on what you do: they probably don’t realize the amount of work involved in this. See if that helps for next time if/when your bro asks for something.

Hey, can you do license plates? Warp10’s gutting his car for racing and so it won’t be street legal anymore. I thought I could get him fake plates with a nifty inscription.

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

Sure, as long as you’re not looking for the raised metal stuff. I can get a flat one and cut letters to put on it, no problem.

As far as setting a monetary value on what I do, it’s pretty much useless. I can’t even get angry, because they don’t take me seriously. If I’m screaming and crying, Dad, especially, has no clue what caused it, and if I’m calm, I might as well be having a conversation with a wall for all they listen.

yeah… that SUCKS. i have unfortunately had to do work for lots of family many many times. and its never, ever been fun. so sorry you had to deal with that. recently i had to design a rodeo program for my father-in-law who lives up in oregon. cool thing is that he didn’t complain too much about my design… but absolutely had no consideration that i have 2 part time jobs i work at from home while i stay at home with my 1.5 year old. oh yeah, no pay of course AND did he send me specs and content in a timely manner? haha… NO! “hey jess, i know i’m late on getting this to you but can you get this done by wednesday? (its monday) the board needs to approve it.” 🙄 🙄 ah, i could go on and on and on about family. i’m now working part time for my husband’s company. so yeah, good times ahead…

by the way… my brother used to race too. drove a sprint car, midget and speedtruck. i know your pain!

The wing that ‘sucked so bad’. Yeah, there were some more things I had planned to do with it, but obviously I’m not now. There’s no point in me tweaking it if they’re going to refuse to use it.

I don’t mind doing stuff for Dad, he does all the maintenance on my truck for no charge, making a few things when he asks isn’t an issue. Being treated like I should bend over backwards to please them for unpaid work that they think is So Easy no matter what I tell them is.

It’s far easier to make stuff for my mother, who’s simply pleased I’ve helped her out.

what’s wrong with that design? i think it looks pretty cool myself… eh, everyone’s got an opinion.

i think people generally assume that since you can do it on a computer it must be SO easy and take no time at all…. 😆

I really don’t know what’s wrong with it. Brother wouldn’t offer anything constructive beyond ‘it looks bad’.

😮 brothers are wonderful sometimes. 😕 :negative:

You need to stick your Father & Brother in a small room (or a plane, or a Steelworkers of America Conference Supper table 😆 ) With my Mom for a couple hours!! They’ll have a whole new appreciation & fear of the Female species!!

Either that or I will volunteer…I hate guys like that. Bet I could reduce them to tears in a couple hours. 😈 XD
Men who treat women as if they are inferior to them or stupid all need a swift kick in the a$$. I’ve met some smart guys who thought I was not up to par…Until they sat one on one with me for a while. hee hee

BTW: My own father was just this way…As he ages though, and I give him pieces I do for Christmas, he has actually complimented me. I gave the Horizon Wolf I painted to them fro Christmas one year…It sits with all my dad’s taxidermied animals with pride of place right out front. And I have NEVER seen a speck of dust on that wolf either. So perhaps one day, you will do something that will awe them into finally giving you credit. Besides, I know it hurts for them to do this, but your works are lovely! I LOVE that wing design! I would say it is one of the nicest I have ever seen, and I was raised next to a 1/4 mile dirt track! 8)

Thanks WSC. Given what I usually see on the little track they go to most weekends, I thought this high contrast white on black with red accents would serious stand out (the rest of the car is black). But I guess they’re going to use stock flames or something from dad’s stock books. Nothing real custom like this. Their loss.

Bet a paycheck that when dad goes to print it out, that he’ll be calling me to the basement to help him.

That really sucks and they need to show more appreciation. I don’t know how you could get your point across to them effectively because you said that what you do doesn’t work. I am sorry, and I like your design!

I say, see if anyone else is interested in buying them from you…Even at the local track. Maybe if/when your dad and brother see the decals on the other car, they will think different of it all.
Hee hee…I’ve been able to give my dad flack for about the past 2 years now…I’m 37, I was a late bloomer to stand up to him. But I do have a good time giving it right back to him. 😉
