Today, I lost my dog Titan. Last night he bloated, despite not being active before or after eating. He underwent the surgery, but passed away about an hour ago in the vet’s care.
R.I.P. big boy……I’ll remember and cherish you always…

May 4, 2010 at 12:04 am #813729I’m so sorry. Bloat is a horrible thing – it often happens for no reason (although genetics can play a role)so don’t blame yourself. It was not your fault. You did what you could by getting him to the vet. I cans still remember the lecture we had on bloat and the first thing the prof said was that 25% of all dogs who bloat will die regardless of what the vet does. That is a really high mortality rate for any condition. π And a lot of those who survive the initial bloat will die within a year due to a second bloat. *hugs*

I used to be a vet tech, so I recognized the symptoms immediately, though I was extremely shocked that he’d not been doing anything before OR after eating. He was just laying there resting when it started. I thought, I hoped…that since I got him there right away that he would make it. I will definately be changing vets, though… because he was VERY rude and abrupt when calling to let me know that I’d lost him.
I’m just not sure how I’m going to cope with the empty dog bed in the corner of my room for awhile, and I can’t bear to move it just yet…

May 4, 2010 at 1:16 am #813736I’m sorry that at such a terrible time the vet was rude to you – there is no excuse for that. Telling someone that their pet didn’t make it is about the worst thing a vet has to do but it should always be done with compassion and sensitivity. I apologize that someone in my profession made you feel even worse. π I don’t understand how anyone could do that. π I hope you find a better vet.
Everyone grieves at their own rate – it might take weeks or months to move Titan’s dog bed. The one thing I saw was that family wants to make the person feel better after such a tragic loss and try to talk the person into getting a new dog right away. For some people that is the right thing but most people need time to grieve first. That time can be days or weeks or even years – there is no “right” amount except what works for each individual person. It is a miserable process but necessary. Hopefully at some point in the future there will be another furry friend for you.
