Well I still sit here unemployed with no hopefuly prospects in site. Now this drives me bonkers–in another economy I would be employed by now. I do have some skills and experience but there is always someone who has one up on me having current experience in a certain software etc. Then I started to get real anxious as to what I’m going to do when my benefits run out and still no job or prospects? I have plenty of company I’m afraid of some very scared people right now wondering the same thing.

You know that saying that when a door closes another one opens up? Well it wasn’t happening so I decided to kick it down! How did I do that–decided to make a little career change! Third one in my life and someone told me once that people make three career changes in their life. I registered at a local community college to take courses to be a medical assistant. Always wanted to be in the medical field and so I figure now could be my chance. I’ve been told that people in the medical field do have steady work.

It is a bit of a risk because it is a two year program. I would be awarded a certificate but being I already have an AA from another community college, they told me I wouldn’t have to take any GE classes and I would get one from them as well! Two degrees better than one??!! 😆 I do have savings to tide me over for a year and my hopes [dreams whatever] are that I could at least be able to get an office position at a local hospital, clinic or doctor’s office. Most colleges do have a job placement department and so hope they can find something for me that would help pay my bills etc. Also I’ll check out what I can qualify for in financial aid.

So no, not an end to my financial worries but at least it’s a step in the right direction–I hope! 😉

I work in the I.T. department at a local hospital near where I live, and I love it! My brother just finished his peramedic schooling a couple months ago and he also loves what he does. Hospitals are pretty much always needing nursesdoctors. Or at least where I work

I’m so sorry to hear about our situation right now.. That stinks. 🙁
Good luck and keep hanging on! I’m sure things will turn around for you. :bye:

Do they have a 2 year nursing program? An associates in nursing will get entry level and you could continue to work on a bachelor’s which I think would be a RN. There is a huge shortage of nurses, might be a better job hunting option. Good luck whatever route you decide to take. 🙂

Thanks, but I’m a bit older and don’t have the time to pursue a bachelor’s in any profession. Also funds are pretty tight as well. From what I understand, MAs get a decent salary in this area! I’m just expanding my opportunties by doing something that I’ve always wanted to do. Personally, I’d love to be a respiratory therapist but again time and funds are against me. But then, who knows???!!!!

Good for you! Compared to most, it’s a good field to get into. I have family in the medical field and there is a lot of need for folks in some aspects of it. Around here, hospitals and medical groups are paying hefty referral rewards to anyone that refers a doctor or nurse/RN to them.

Good for you! I’m rooting for you – what better time to go for a job you’ve wanted to get into, then when you have extra time from unemployment!

That’s great and just remember you’ve always got the FORUM behind you supporting and rooting for you and that’s better than anything even Star Wars can do for you.

Here’s another rooting for you! I think medical office would be a good fit for you, and not that long to get into. I don’t know about the RN. It’s an associate degree in many places- doesn’t have to be bachelors. (CNA and LPN are vocational degrees) And maybe with the schooling you have, you could skip the prerequisites and move right into the degree work- 2 years worth where I am. But it will be a LOT more expensive unless you can get grants, and they tell you that you are not allowed to work at all while you are taking the degree work; that you must devote your all to it. (why I don’t have an RN, I had a kid, ailing grandmother and needed a job to pay bills and survive those 2 years) Medical assistant will build more on what you already have in terms of training/skills and allow you to get a decent paying job faster- a big concern when you don’t have so many working years left. (not intended to be a slam on you, LadyFirebird, or anyone else past a certain age here- I’m past an age also and being able to work long enough to make the schooling worthwhile financially is a concern)
If you really enjoy the medical field, maybe look into LPN first (only 1 year). That would abbreviate your RN training should you wish to go further.

I’m sooooo glad I have all of you behind me! 🙂 Really, really helps with the morale because it is scary going back to school for education in another field after all these years. Right now I’m hoping just to get registered so I can get my classes. My counselor emailed me saying I wasn’t coming up when they try to put me in for early registration. But her receptionist said it takes 2 days from when you apply to get you in their system. If I’m not in by Wednesday, I’m going down there!

Being older has it perks—I get to register for my classes before anyone else does–that comes up this Friday!!!!! 😮 All this is moving so fast it makes my head spin. One moment I’m excited like anything and the next I’m having anxiety attacks!!!! If I can get a full year worth of classes done I can at least be placed in an office. The MA certificate is a 2 year program at this college but I’ll receive an AS because of having an AA at another college. From there I can figure out my options and from what I’m hearing from some people about the salaries for MAs fresh out of school is amazing! 😮 Getting a Grant would be fanastic! I can do that and devote full time to school!

Right now I hope just to get put into the college’s system so I can register for classes–priority number one! I’ll know more at the end of the week.
