Well I guess it’s my turn.
I went to work today after like 3 weeks being away from this place. Their cockateil was in bad shape.
their was no water the dish was dry. So I gave him water right away. He nearly dashed out of the cage just to get to the water.
You guys that own birds know that they can’t go without water for too long.
Anyway he looks terrible his feathers are in bad shape and he doesn’t look well.
The lady called my mom tonight and asked her if she knew anyone that wanted the bird.
My mom mentioned to her what I saw and did, the lady said that she got the bird to teach her daughter responsability. An 8 year old! Get her to do things around the house first before giving her the responsibility of a life! 😡
I’m so angry!
Anyway I called her and told her I’ll go get her as soon as possible. If I could get someone to stay with my son I would go get him tonight!
I won’t be keeping him but will get him a good home. Until then he’s staying here.
I just hope I don’t get attachted. 🙄That poor bird 🙁 It’s wonderful that you care enough to take her in, BDW.
Seems to me that parents should *always* be prepared to reinforce the responsibility of taking care of an animal in their children. It’s just not realistic to buy the animal and then hope that the child picks up the responsibility instantly. If the kid doesn’t do their part on their own, the parent should get in there and see that it gets done regardless. The animal is not at fault for a child’s lack of concern for its care, and shouldn’t have to suffer for it.

And rehome the animal ASAP, so the child doesn’t think “oh, I can keep my pet and my parents will care for it.”
That’s animal cruelty. Thank goodness for you, BDW, or who knows how that poor bird might have ended!
That poor tiel. Starvation and dehydration is a terrible way to go, and with a bird’s metabolism can take as little as 2 days. Totally preventable and cruel! Thank you for helping this bird. It pains me to know that so many people would consider these intelligent animals ‘disposable’.

Or instil some kind of punishment system for not taking care of the pet… like, for every time the parents have to feed/take for a walk/clean up the poop/etc, taking away their game system or not letting them visit friends. That’s what my parents did.And if that doesn’t work, then rehome the animal. It’s generally really hard on an animal to be rehomed, and if the owner (child) can be taught responsibility (while the parents make sure the chores get done, regardless) then it shouldn’t have to come to that.
Having said that, what was done to that bird was cruel and very sad. I’m glad that you’re rescuing it BDW. Maybe you can find it a responsible home.
Well “Charlot” is home. He didn’t trust me at all. But he’s not a lost cause.
After spending a couple of hours with Charlot, 🙂 he is finaly trusting me and lets me pet him. He bit me at first but now lets me caress his neck and goes willingly on my finger. I don’t even have to touch him. He doesn’t recongnise vegies or fruits so oviously he hasn’t had any. He never had a bath either, boy he was ha…ppy when I misted him and then offered a bath.
I need to find a home for him fast since I’m already getting attached. I can’t keep him, my place is small and I already have over 20 finches. 🙁

I have two myself, both Pearl and one is 15 years old and the other came as the buddy of a possessive Sun Conure. Birds are a lot of work, and they are very intelligent and shouldn’t be used as training methods for children who change their minds hourly! The parents are responsible for the life of their children AND pets in the home, they should be ashamed. Lucky is your Charlot for the day you came, you saved her life. You deserve an award. Btw, I love your icon – did you paint that wolf? It catches my eye all the time, when I browse thru the forum! Oh, I raised finches quite a few years ago (20+); they were the beginning of my bird fetish – they multiplied quickly and it was such fun watching them grow to adults! Then I adopted parakeets from the Humane Society – which turned into four keets – which then turned into a cockatiel – which turned into 2 tiels, and of course Huggie the squawking funny goffin cockatoo plus the sun conure. It’s a lot of bird crap to clean up, isn’t it? LOL

:shrug: I wouldn’t say I deserve an award. I did what needed to be done. But Thank you. 🙂

There is a store in my area that deals only with birds and I have become good friends with the manager. Now that I’m not working, I’m spending a lot of time there and sometimes can answer questions customers have. The one I hear a lot is ‘Is this bird good for children?’ The child wants the bird but I ask the parent, ‘Do YOU want a bird?’ Because knowing children, their attention will be attracted by something else and the care of the bird will go to the parents. Some of them are surprised I ask this and I tell them why. At least it makes them think about it and added to the fact that tiels can live 25 to 30 years old!
So glad you were able to rescue this bird–I hope you find a home soon that is, if he hasn’t latched onto your heart already!! 😀
Good news, tomorrow night there is a girl that is going to come see him. She already saw pics of him and she already likes him.
Tomorrow is when she makes the big decision. Cross your fingers!
