I have not been selling on ebay regularly, but when I have broken down to sell on ebay, I also get confused and suspicouse about the closing fees and thier over all service.
The invoices i get for thier end of the month Fee collection is more confusing then it was 2 years ago when i started selling..
and this new hold on your money? every time my sister sells on ebay, they put a hold on her money! now my totaly stats on ebay are only SLIGHTLY above hers…but they have not put holds on mine….and no one seems to be able to give a strait forword answer why that is…Is it just me???? or have you other members who have used ebay more so felt that stuff is…wierd?(i’m tired, so please skip over the really bad spelling errors.)
December 13, 2009 at 3:27 am #499817December 13, 2009 at 3:45 am #796190When I got dinged with a $2 fee on a $5 listing… I stopped selling… haven’t seen anything since…. :nea:
December 13, 2009 at 2:56 pm #796191Here’s a page that explains why payments might be held. How many of the items on the bulleted list are true for your sister (and not for you)? Another reason not listed that I’ve seen is dependant on the final price of an item. Sometimes if the final value is high enough they will hold the funds. I don’t remember what that “magic” value is.
Quote:Why is my payment being held?
Most PayPal payments are processed immediately. However, if you’re a new seller, if you’re selling an item in a fraud risk category, or if you’ve received some low Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs), your payment may be held until we are confident that the buyer received the item. Here are some reasons we might hold your payment:
- If you’ve been an eBay member for less than 6 months, and haven’t sold very much on eBay yet[/*:m]
- If you’ve a Feedback score of less than 100, and don’t have a record of good performance [/*:m]
- If you’ve a buyer dissatisfaction percentage* of 5% or greater [/*:m]
- If your average detailed seller rating (DSR) is less than 4.5 [/*:m]
- If you’ve received fewer than 20 detailed seller ratings in the last 12 months[/*:m]
- If your item is in a high-risk category, such as gift certificates, video games, cell phones, computers, or consumer electronics[/*:m]
- If there’s an open dispute or claim on the transaction[/*:m]
- If the payment is being held in reserve[/*:m]
*Buyer dissatisfaction percentage is measured by calculating negative events as a percentage of your transactions. Negative events include negative and neutral Feedback, Detailed seller ratings of 2 or lower, and disputes for items not received or significantly not as described.
So you know, payment HAS cleared when Paypal says Ship Now. That is different from them putting a hold on your funds. Your funds are securely held by Paypal; the buyer cannot take just them back. They have been taken out of the buyers account.

December 13, 2009 at 4:39 pm #796192well see, i’ve seen that list before. My sister and I both have looked at it, and there is nothing on that list that really differes from my sister and I.
Both of us have been members way over 6 months.
Both have 100 percent feedback score. I
as far as I know, niether of us has a disatisfaction scoring(we have never had an unhappy buyer)
My DSR rating does not even show up for me.
we both have fewer then 20 detailed seller ratings from the last 12 months each. both of us avoid ebay.
I have no idea if windstones fall in that catagory? be we sell only windstones.
And the last two do not apply to eather of us.They finaly told her that any item above $100 for finaly value is called high risk so her money will be held..but see, you guys know most of my items, ESPECIALY those Keepers, go for way over 100, and still my monies are not held. I tested this with the SPectrolite, which sold for over 200, but as soon as the seller sent the money, I had it for my use. And no one seems to know why…
We know that the money is taken out of the buyers account, but like my sister points out,” when paypal holds that money, they also hold the shipping money that i charge so I can ship the item…making me pay out of pocket……..how is that fair?”

I don’t think it is. That’s why I don’t sell on eBay anymore. I never did very well selling there, anyhow. 😳
Besides, after all the fees and hassle, I find it’s just far less of a headache just to sell directly. There is a trade off of course.. no bidding wars and not nearly as much ‘visibility’, but I’m starting to redirect what I’m saving in eBay fees to try and market my work instead.Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! My art: featherdust.comDecember 13, 2009 at 8:34 pm #796194I’ve really been unhappy with ebay’s new way of dealing with people, especially sellers. It’s becoming more of a hassle to sell there than a benefit…
December 13, 2009 at 9:38 pm #796195I much rather deal direct if I know the person. Think it sucks that ebay slaps on all kinds of fees and holds and such on their sellers. I’d be confused tooo! 😕
January 7, 2010 at 11:44 pm #796196GRR!
Due to an unexpected bill I popped a few things on ebay. One of my sets of ostrich feather burlesque fans sold; they are pretty expensive so I was excited that they sold. Well I shouldn’t have been too excited because I’m not going to see that money for a while! Not only the money for them but I’m out the shipping cost & they were pretty pricey to ship since they are so big. Just what I DIDN’T need; more costs!
I don’t usually sell on ebay but I’ve hda the same account with Paypal since 1998! you’d think they would take that into account!
I’m very upset.
January 7, 2010 at 11:50 pm #796197They really are geared far too much to the ‘big, everyday’ type of sellers these days…but for me, it’s the more sporadic sellers that aren’t churning out mass-produced whatever that make browsing there interesting. 🙄
January 7, 2010 at 11:58 pm #796198I have not put anything up for auction in a few months. So they held your paypment too crimson?
January 8, 2010 at 12:00 am #796199Yep, Paypal says they took the money from the buyer but that it can be held from my account for 21 days. They will only release it if the tracking number I entered shows it is delivered (but I have read that alot of people have problems with that too) or the buyer leaves me positive feedback.
January 8, 2010 at 12:04 am #796200have you called paypal at all?
My sister spent a lot of time on a couple transactions, calling them and asking for a strait answer of why her item was deemed to have a payment hold on it. Each time was a different answer, anything from,” you will have to ask ebay, they are the ones doing it.” to a run down of possible reasons why and when she refuted each reason with evidence of her item/status/ what not..they then had no idea/ to “we are doing this to every one.”January 8, 2010 at 12:08 am #796201🙁 That’s really unfortunate.

I haven’t called them yet but I plan to do so today. Have been reading other horror stories online, even on the paypal forums of these problems. There has actually even been a website created to start a class action suit against them.
Grr.
