So while digging through packed boxes, trying to get rid of……………….un-needed sufff……I found some of my windstones!!! YAY!! am so happy. Among the dragons, I pulled out a male peacock…who ended up with his clear coat looking funked out(as in funky) from the bubble wrapping. It has this…crinkled look?
I vaguely remember a disgussion some time ago possible in 07 about it or early 08, does any one remember if there is a fix for that????? If I can’t fix him, I am just not sure what I will be able to do with him 🙁I also found a white male in pristine condition I am thinking of selling, and one of my really early pieces or 07 i belive! it is a small dragon pyo with lovely blues and gold interference. I’ll be selling him.
November 11, 2009 at 7:20 am #499612November 11, 2009 at 10:50 am #792553I’m interested to know if it can be fixed as well. The brown rising spectral I have has that crinkled clear coat too.
November 11, 2009 at 12:31 pm #792554I think this is the thread you are referring too.
November 11, 2009 at 2:43 pm #792555I always promised to myself that if I store anything in boxes (which I don’t right now ^^), I’d use the original plastic bag and box. But I had no idea that bubble wrap could actually cause marks on the paint?? 😮

This is a known issue, but we don’t really know what exactly causes the clear coat to get soft enough for the plastic/bubble wrap/whatever to leave impressions/wrinkles in it.
Can you tell us what sort of temperature and humidity conditions it was stored in?

My art: featherdust.comNovember 11, 2009 at 7:18 pm #792557yes I can! It definately is an interesting affect.
First off I have a small hoard of dragons packed, they were in storage for around 2 years.
The dragons were packed together, dragons in thier boxes..then those boxes in bigger boxes. And accordingly, these bigger boxes were packed in the same spot together. The dragons I unpacked included in peacock: emporer, male, fledgling, coiled male, young, hatching empress. A ruby lap dragon. Variouse curlies, VF pleges, trio dragon and circle of cats candle lamp, Stegosaurouys, and a white male. Among a few others.
The Male dragon was in a box with the White male dragon. NEATHER one had original packing when i Purchased them, so I had both wrapped in bubble wrap, and in the same box. Thier box was with two or three other windstone boxes in a bigger box.
We had them in a detached work rook that is seperate from the house. No heating, no electricity. Surprisingly it is really dry in that room. We do not have a very high humidity here where I live, even in the winter. And when it rains, the room still stays very dry.
Temperaturse easily dip below freezing in that room, as there is little insilation, and in the summer we have a few days of 105 farenhiet. At most we get a week of that. So in general temperatures though out the year for that room fluctuate between 45-100 with the occational extreme. I did notice on previous occasions, that col temp. causes clear coat cracking…like on a glazed pottery…but none of my dragons have any clear coat crackling so it must not have gotten that cold.Inside insulated boxes, I think the temp might be tappered a bit more, and there is never an instantaneous severe temp change.
The boxes were only in those conditions for around a little over a year. We then pulled them into our sunroom that has heating and cooling and is even more so very dry.Now out of all of the dragons listed above.. Only the peacock male has crinkling. The white dragon that I had packed with him is perfect, just as if i packed him. All the other dragons as well are pristine, even my 3 pyo’s.
It makes me wonder.

yes!! that was the one indeed! 😉
November 12, 2009 at 2:54 am #792559How strange! I wonder why just the peacock male did this??
When I moved from GA to NY I had to put all my (boxed) Windstones in an outdoor storage unit with no climate control. Some were in their original bags and cardboard inserts, and some were in nothing more than bubble wrap. The storage unit was so outdoors that sometimes when we’d open it up there would be snow that had somehow blown inside. They were there for over a year, and that winter was a cold one… it got to -25°F for several days and it was below freezing for months at a time. There were times when we couldn’t get into the unit because it was completely frozen up. The summer temperatures were around 80 so I’d guess that inside the unit perhaps got to 95-100 (it’s metal construction, no insulation). Our summers tend to be pretty humid.
I have Windstones in many of the production colors (including several peacocks, one was a male) and none of mine did this, though I was scared to death that they might. I wonder what the common denominator is here…Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
My art: featherdust.comNovember 13, 2009 at 4:49 am #792560Heating the piece with a heat gun evenly should blend it back in
November 13, 2009 at 5:03 am #792561I will be trying this blow gun idea, but one of the things i find odd is…if a blow gun can soften the coating that much, wouldn’t a couple of days in over 100 degree heat crinkled all the dragons??
November 13, 2009 at 8:39 am #792562I wonder if it has to do with the plastic type the dragon was wrapped in? And does the top coat on the dragons contain any polymer? I only asked because there there are certain plastics that my rubber fishing lures soften up, while other kinds are fine.
November 13, 2009 at 3:38 pm #792563Ah, that could be it! See, my storage unit got very, very cold… but not so much hot.
Windstone HAS used different finishing sprays over the years for various reasons. It could be that the male peacock had a clearcoat that got soft in the heat, while the others had a different type of clearcoat.
It makes more sense for the finish to soften in the heat.Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
My art: featherdust.comNovember 13, 2009 at 5:23 pm #792564I know windstone doesn’t like to sell boxes but it would be nice if they could sell those nice thick plastic bags for these storage purposes. Now i’m worried about the pieces I have boxed up. It wouldn’t seem like anyone could do any sort of rip off with just the bag does it? just a thought 😀
November 14, 2009 at 6:33 am #792565Yup my peacock male has yet to recover from the crinkled condition that I originally posted in that referenced thread. Honestly I haven’t had time to try heating him up yet! I don’t have a heat gun but will try my hairdryer. He sits so pretty on his shelf that I don’t really notice the wrinkly finish from a distance, which is probably why I haven’t felt the pressing need to fix him yet! If anyone manages to find a good way to repair this issue please let us know!
Forever seeking: Blackwatch the raffle Old Warrior, Jennifer Miller's pieces, and GB Baby unis!
