Hey everyone! I just wanted to share pics of my dragon costume! He’s a Dragon Wizard. Everything is handmade except for the actual Dragon Head and his hands. His staff and beaded medicine bag are made with real fur and buckskin. His staff has one large feather attached to it, with fur and beaded leather straps crisscrossing down the length of the stick. His robe is accented with a silver Celtic brooch and black satin along the hemlines. Hope you like him! 😀

October 23, 2009 at 2:40 am #788083I can try and describe the process!
I took two coathangers, but you can use any heavier wire. Be careful with any sharp ends!
One I bent into a rectangular shape, and crossed the ends in an X shape inside, you end up with a single piece of coathanger wire like this |X|. I put hot glue ‘nubs’ at each sharp end of the coathanger to keep things safe.
The second coat hanger I shape into the wing arms. It ends up in this shape /__/ with the bottom bar attaching to the top of the first |X| shape. The |X| shape is to stabilize the wings on your back and you can cover with a fabric of your choice. I economically attached the two pieces of wire together with some duct tape and hot glue, then covered everything with fabric. To make the wing ‘fingers’, my cheap trick was to buy the super extra long plastic zip ties at Home Depot. They are like 3′ or more long, and have just the right sproing in them when walking so that your wings are not rigid and fake looking! I attach them to the wire with hot glue, following photos of bat wings to aid my accuracy. Then I covered everything in my wing fabric (any lightweight fabric with some good sway to it works great!). I was careful to run a line of glue down each wing-finger to attach the fabric to it so that it moves correctly. Grab a cheap roll of wide elastic from a craft shop and attach enough to the base |X| so that it goes around each arm, like a backpack. I disguised the elastic on my wings with feathers, since my dragon costume was feathery. You can get creative and attach more fur/hair, or maybe beads and dangly things to add to your shaman look.
Here are some black wings I put together in like 20 minutes or less on Halloween night… with some care and time you can make yours look way better (these were rushed).
Please forgive my hair exploding everywhere and derpy expression, I was tired as it was the end of the night! When I wore the costume outside I had my hair tucked in and more feathers to the sides.Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
