Danny’s transplant doctors want to start him on some new antibiotic because they think he has an infection on top of whatever else he has going on. They called the perscription in to Rite Aid and we were going to pick it up after we took Alyssa to her gym class. Well Danny left his cell phone in his shoes while we played with Alyssa in class and found he had a voice message. It was Rite Aid saying they couldn’t fill the script. He called them back and they wanted to know if he REALLY needed the medication because “its expensive”. The pharmacist told Danny it wasn’t expensive for us (only the normal $20 copay) but its expensive for Rite Aid and they didn’t want to order it. SERIOUSLY?! So now instead of picking the script up tonight we have to wait until tomorrow night because they didn’t order it and the next shipment wont come in until tomorrow afternoon. What does it matter if its expensive if I have insurance and it covers the medication?! I can’t believe they can do this! I’m boiling mad right now!
September 15, 2009 at 1:52 am #499196September 15, 2009 at 3:06 am #783648That’s rediculous. Is there another pharmacy you can go to to get all your meds filled? I would go there and not ever go to Rite Aid again. 👿
September 15, 2009 at 3:11 am #783649That’s ridiculous. I’ve never had a pharmacy do that for a prescription. I would change pharmacies, if possible.
Now ask them what happened when I tried to get a new sharps container, and that’s a different story…. 🙄
September 15, 2009 at 3:26 am #783650I have never experianced anything like that before…That is so unacceptable on their part, I would be complaining to someone there for sure… 😡

Insurance pays only so much, as the pharmacy is only allowed a certain max charge just like a doctor’s office. But still, if you have been filling scripts there for a long time (Even 2 years is quite a while actually) then that should have tipped them off, that YES he needs the meds. 😡
I’d advise you to get a new pharmacist pronto too. :yes:September 15, 2009 at 9:39 am #783652We’ve been using this pharmacy for 6 years (it wasn’t always a Rite Aid it was originally something else). Once Rite Aid took it over 3 years ago it all went down hill. I’ve had problems with other pharmacies in the past giving me a fit about how expensive some of Danny’s meds are. When I used to work at the hospital I got one of his nebulizer meds filled there. When I went to pick it up the pharmacist who filled it (and wasn’t even checking me out at the register mind you) made it a point to come to the window and yell at me how expensive the medication was and she couldn’t believe anyone would actually fill it. I was stunned and just took the meds and walked away. I never had anyone talk to me like that and I was too much of a sissy to do anything about it. Danny is going to make some phone calls today since I have to work but we are bound and determined that something happens to this Rite Aid. Its just not right that they refuse to fill any script because its too expensive for them.
September 15, 2009 at 1:34 pm #783653That doesn’t make sense!!!!! 😡 If your insurance is going to reimburse them, what is their problem? I agree with everyone else saying to go elsewhere–also, might call your husband’s doctor and explain what they did. Sometimes a word from the doctor straightens things out.
I’ve never heard of anything like but the wife of one of my bosses went to fill a perscription from a pharmacy they usually go to and they made her pay everything up front! That’s not what is in our agreement (we are a union shop and get our medical through the local union). Well she called the person who handles all this and she made a call and that pharmacy had to reimburse her! Pretty much read them the act. Angers me that they are trying to screw people over!
You should NOT have to be going through this. You have enough anxities right now with your husband’s health that you don’t need some BS from a pharmacy! This is just wrong! 👿
September 15, 2009 at 2:52 pm #783654As though you don’t have enough to worry about right now they have to go and do this! We have Rite-Aid out here too and I will not have anything filled there. Perhaps a letter/complaint to the State Pharmacy Board from both you and your doctor? Or the Consumer Protection Office?
Hang in there. **hugs**
September 15, 2009 at 3:31 pm #783655Geez, do people have to be bleeding on their floor for a pharmacy to believe they REALLY NEED a medication?! Ridiculous. I hope you get this squared away pronto and manage to get Rite Aid in some serious trouble. A person’s life is at stake, who CARES about the cost of the med??
September 15, 2009 at 4:18 pm #783656It’s none of their bleeping business – you have a script, they’re supposed to fill it. Yeah, some meds are really expensive. A good pharmacist should know why a med is needed, so they shouldn’t mention price.
I’ve had pharmacists ask me if I was insured because the prescribed med was expensive, but I’ve never heard of anything like this.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmSeptember 15, 2009 at 4:53 pm #783657We have similar stuff happen at our office a lot. We prescrib a med for a patient, and the insurance company sends the patient and us a form asking if the patient really neeeds this particular medicine because it’s so expensive, and then gives a list of similar medicines! It’s ridiculous. If we wanted the patient to have one of the other meds we would have prescribed it! It’s called bean pushers making health care decisions when they have no reason to be, and it’s what’s going to happen if the government takes over our healthcare. 🙁

Absolutely! If the pharmacist is asking you if you *really* need it, you might consider whether the pharmacist is qualified at all to even fill them. Oftentimes, the pharmacist knows more than the doctor about the meds. And as well they should! It really is none of their business how expensive it is if you have insurance that will pay for it. Now, your hubby is 1 day behind on nipping the infection in the bud, and that could cause complications. As someone said, you should write a complaint to both the pharmacy and to a level higher up because refusing to fill a prescription is endangering his life.

I’m not sure if the government is looking to take it over. Either way, SOMETHING needs to happen. Insurance companies are insuring less for more money. Hopefully, the reform will keep people with insurance insured and people without insurance with a way to get it. And more importantly, force insurance companies to actually insure them. (I could rant about that, myself, but that’s not the topic here.)
September 15, 2009 at 11:11 pm #783660That’s nuts. All the pharmacies I’ve dealt with (mostly CVS), I’ve had a pharmacist sometimes let me know if something is expensive when they are filling it or if I call/drop off the prescription, just to let me know in case I didn’t want to fill it due to that reason, or if there was a cheaper generic (if my insurance gave me the option of brand name or generic), but only to be helpful. They usually will ask, especially if it is something new (since I use the same pharmacy). If they don’t reach you, they’ll still fill it and let you know at pick up, in case they couldn’t reach you or if you need to come back the next day should you not be able to afford it, like if you didn’t realize it wasn’t covered by insurance. They’ll also let you know if they can’t fill the entire thing because either they don’t have the drug in stock or not enough to fill the entire prescription, if you need to come back to pick up the rest or need to wait a day (if you’d rather only make one trip). They’re always pleasant about it too. Not flat out – hey, this is expensive, why would you want to buy something this expensive? That’s just bull! 👿
