😳 Oops is right.
I was simmering a piece of Malaysian driftwood for my fish tank–this is a special, dense wood for aquariums that resists rotting. It naturally leaches tannins into the water, reducing the Ph, which can be good, but this piece was leaching too much into the small tank it was in. So I took it out to boil it. Basically all you do is simmer the wood completely submerged in a pot, changing the water periodically as the tannins leach out. I dumped out 4 pots of tea-colored water and put the last one on….
….then completely forgot about it. For 5 hours.
I even left the house for the last two. The pot boiled completely dry. Then it started on the wood. I seriously don’t know how a fire wasn’t started, and I’m just thanking every benevolent force in the universe right now that my stupidity didn’t cause untold damage. 🙁 When my sister and I came back home, we both went “Oooh! Smells like there’s a campfire outside, someone must have made one!”
Half an hour later, my sister discovered the burner, and the wood. Which up till then I STILL had completely forgotten about. She took the pot off the burner, and when she touched the cremated piece of wood, it literally crumbled into dust.
It’s the next day and my house still smells like a campfire. I ruined my good pot. And that was a really beautiful, really unique piece of wood too. Not replaceable. Then again, neither is an entire apartment complex full of people’s lives and homes. I’m just really thankful.

August 11, 2009 at 11:57 pm #779599I’ve done the wood simmering thing as well, back when I had fish. YIKES! 😮 What a blessing it didn’t start on fire! A pot and pretty piece of driftwood is a small thing in comparison. 🙂
August 12, 2009 at 12:21 am #779600So glad you’re okay! That is scary and I’m forgetful myself! Thankfully all was lost was a nice pot and a piece of wood. I have a post-it on my garage door that reads: Did you turn everything off, stupid! It works and forces me to go back and check burners etc.
Did your post of which Windstones would you take flash through your mind? Just had to ask! 😆

XD XD XD
Karma’s a B**** ain’t she!?! Omg. And yes, it definitely crossed my mind! Welp, I’d already decided which ones I’d take! I might have gotten my sister to take one as well, but not two–she’d need the other one for beating me on the way out. 🙄The absolute WORST part is, I’ve given her so much crap since she moved in about leaving those burners on, which she’s done like 5 times. She hasn’t said one word yet, not one. word. I’m shocked 😮 She’s either really forgetful, really forgiving, or biding her time….
It was scary though for sure, I did freak out a bit last night.
August 12, 2009 at 12:36 am #779602Oh my, I did tat once when Alex was a baby with nipples for his bottle :puke: .
August 12, 2009 at 12:42 am #779603Eew. At least ash was easy to clean up, I imagine the rubber was all melted?
August 12, 2009 at 1:04 am #779604At least you’re okay and your apartment complex is still standing! I left a skillet on high and forgot about it; I was trying to heat it up faster because I didn’t feel like waiting. Next thing I know, it’s smoking on the stove!
August 12, 2009 at 1:33 pm #779605Ahh! I think the worst I ever did was turn the oven on to pre-heat without realizing that my mom had stored her wicker casserole dish holder inside. It didn’t heat up very long though before I caught it. Maybe 5 min!
I’ve taken to setting the timer when I put something on and have to step away. That way even if I manage to forget, the timer won’t, and I’ll hear it screaming at me to go check the stovetop!
I have to be very careful not to burn anything in the house since it can kill my birds. Those of you with non-stick cookware, be doubly careful, even if you don’t have birds. If nonstick PFTEs overheat– which they can do at low temperatures– it is really unhealthy to breathe the odorless, colorless gas they give off. It can kill smaller animals outright and send people with lowered lung function straight to the hospital.

I have birds and have been warned about non-stick cookware–it will kill them instantly! When I’m cooking, I ususally turn the stove top fan on and have a window or the side door open to have some ventilation going! I do this when I’m using paints, glues, nail polish remover etc anything with fumes. Keeping birds makes you careful about things like this!
August 12, 2009 at 2:41 pm #779607I’m glad you’re okay! I’ve been forgetful myself about things like that, but nothings bad happened yet. Except exploding hard boiled eggs. Yuck. :puke: But that was someone else’s forgetfulness with the stove, I just got clean-up duty.
August 12, 2009 at 6:37 pm #779608Yikes. Glad you’re alright. Have done this myself, but was just boiling water…was painting and totally forgot about the pot. 😳
