How sad… this woman had a legit 501c non profit(I think it is?) organization, she just went about it the wrong way. She died and her hubby called the SPCA. They had over 123 dogs, over 100 cats, and over 200 birds. I got to go out there (even though its not open to the public yet) because I volunteer for the Hawaii Dog Foundation. It was awful. The dogs at least were all well fed, but the lady was BREEDING MUTTS to sell the puppies to pay for the adult dogs food. Talk about a plan bound to backfire. 🙁 Anyway, Stephanie told me I could take whatever dog I wanted. I asked what they needed help with and she and the vet took me back into this room. They had about 6 mommas with new litters and a Chi mix about to give birth any hour. I took a small terrier mix with 8 two day old puppies. They said she was the neediest of the lot… Fever, dehydrated, anti social, etc… but she looked healthy, if a little skinny, and she was small. I have pics at home and will post them tonight. 4 boys and 4 girls! So I am the proud foster momma of a hoarding case. I feel special. 😀 Momma didnt know what grass was, so she has probably been penned up for a while. That is one of the worst things, to me… not knowing the background. :nea: Just wanted to share. I know you guys love animals, too, and this rescue made me feel good.
Puppies!!!
July 24, 2009 at 1:59 am #498823July 24, 2009 at 2:05 am #776852That’s a great thing you did, ski! I feel sorry for the animals; I’m sure you’ll provide them with a good home. How long do you intend to keep them?

I told them I could keep them till mid to late August. Maybe I can keep them till the puppies are ready for adoption, but by then I think I will have popped myself. We will have to see if I can handle it all closer to my due date (sept 20th).
July 24, 2009 at 2:21 am #776854That’s really great of you to take the mom and pups. I hope they find good home – the SPCA must be totally overwhelmed with the number of animals. One of the cat rescues in NJ had a similar thing happen where one of the ladies started hoarding – she had a second house no one knew about and filled it with cats then had a nervous breakdown. It was a disaster for the rescue – they ended up not able to help any other cats for a long time until they handled all of hers. Good luck with the puppies and I can’t wait to see pictures!

Thats aweful!!! there are no wrods for people who, like you, are willing and able to help in these situations.
This gives me hope that that horrible gentle giants “rescue” will someday be shut down, maybe when burt dies!!
July 24, 2009 at 5:19 am #776856I had to Goggle Gentle Giants, but there is so much conflicting information. If half of the bad is true, its a very sad situation. Have you dealt with them, Ruff?
July 24, 2009 at 5:54 am #776857No I did contact them several years ago before I knew anything about them, but I never went any farther, the fact that they were willing to ship me a “rescue” pup, to another country as soon as my cheque cleared with few questions weirded me out.
I am a member of a couple of forums with different people who have battled with them, one was someone who adopted from them, and another is a rescue person who is part of a group trying to get their 501c revoked. She has even had their add removed from perfinders a couple of times because they violated the TOS by putting pictures of dogs and puppies that they dont have. Hell most of the dogs on their website they dont have, some of those that have been for adoption were the ones I looked at like 6 or 7 years ago.
July 24, 2009 at 6:32 pm #776858such a GREAT thing for you to do!!
Anumal Hoarders can;t help themselves so I have heard
Oprah had a few on her show
it’s 501(c)3 for a non profit organizatition, That is where I do most of my charity workJuly 24, 2009 at 6:56 pm #776859Thats really sad, Ruff, and yes, super suspicious. 🙁
DDVM, they had so many cats, and the cats were in a worse way than the dogs. A lot more infections, etc, and they looked skinnier. There are several cat rescue groups that are helping out, but yes, I can imagine its overwhelming. I can only hope that some are adoptable.
Mom and pups are doing fine this morning, so it looks to be smooth sailing till those little buggers start getting around better. Then, I imagine, I will have my hands full.
July 24, 2009 at 8:19 pm #776860Oh cute!! So good of you to take them in. Poor things.
July 24, 2009 at 8:39 pm #776861Ski you are an awsome person.
July 24, 2009 at 9:47 pm #776862Ski, it’s so wonderful of you to take in Mom and pups! Poor Mom looks like she needs some TLC. I know she’ll have it with you! 🙂 Pretty soon there will be an awful lot of little feet running around your house!!! 😮
July 25, 2009 at 1:10 am #776863What precious pups! So good of you to foster them. Too bad about people who hoard–they think they’re doing the animals some good but in most cases these animals are sick and dying because of the crowded conditions. You can’t give proper care to that many animals!
July 25, 2009 at 1:49 am #776864What a great thing you did Ski 😀 ! Those puppies are adorable.
